There is a new American movie being made about Sherlock. Jude Law is Watson and Robert Downey Jr. is Holmes. What does everyone think about this? I personally am not pleased with the choices. I prefer Jeremey Brett, or they should have at least have a British actor play Holmes.

As much as I liked Downey Jr. in his latest movie, I agree that they should've grabbed a British actor to play the lead. If they were simply looking for star power to pull attention to the movie, Jude Law isn't exactly a slouch. It's too bad Brett passed away. It would've been fun to see him make some sort of cameo.

Apparently the plot of the movie will be based on an unpublished graphic novel by Lionel Wigram and will be the first in a franchise with an escalating role for Moriarty (source imdb.com). Anybody have any idea what graphic novel this is? I didn't find Wigram in LT's database.

That plot idea irks me even more, as absolute lover of the cannon. i have no idea, but it is not one orginal stories and that makes me sad :(. Oh silly Hollywood..

Definitely NOT Robert Downey Jr. as SH and not (with a lower case) Jude Law as Dr.W.
I don't think it is a good idea to have a non British actor playing SH.
Not very long ago I got from Netflix a SH movie, called "The Case of the Silk Stocking", with Rupert Everett playing Sherlock Holmes. The story is not a Conan Doyle's one, but it was pretty good, and Everett as our favourite sleuth was just perfect, aquiline profile and all.
I wonder why they did not think of him for this movie as well.

I heard that Sherlock is going to use his martial arts skills more than his deductive abilities in this adaptation. I don't mind if he has *some* martial arts skills — it would sort of fit with his proficient-in-almost-everything persona — but to sacrifice deduction to make him into an action hero? Spare me.

Definitly not going to see this movie, it really just turns Sherlock into something that is more like Indiana Jones, Sherlock was not that, but more of a thinker and used deductive reasoning....

i agree.
a bit of 'Baritsu' might not be amiss, but it sounds like they are trying to make this into Holmes vs The 300, in which case they might as well cast Brad Pitt as the Master. then he could turn Holmes into Batman, like he did to Achilles!

(hork!)

I'm going to pretend I never even read the name Brad Pitt in connection with Sherlock... :-P

Have you heard about the Sherlock Holmes comedy that is in production? It will star Sacha Baron Cohen as Sherlock and Will Ferrell as Dr. Watson. Here's a link to a story about it:

Oh no!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot stand Will Ferrell. At least Sacha Baron Cohen is British!

I really wish I could get excited about this movie, but from what I've heard they are butchering it so the excitement probably won't happen. I'm not happy about the comedy either. Not that I take SH too seriously, but Will Ferrell...come on; don't kill great literary humor and wit with physical and crude humor and bad acting.

Here's a link to the trailer for the new Downey/Law Holmes movie:

Not quite sure what to make of it yet.

I will forever maintain that Jude Law should've been cast as Holmes. Seeing Downey Jr. in the trailer only reaffirmed this for me.

I saw the trailer this morning, and this Holmes-Moriarty duel seems to be similar to the tone of the 'League of Extraordinary Gentlemen' (I'd say compare it with the comic book, rather than the movie). Victorian superheros, hmmm...

18aluvalibri

I just saw the trailer and, quite frankly, I am baffled.
Downey Jr. is, in my opinion, the least likely choice for Sherlock Holmes. It just looked as a big buffoonery.
Poor Sherlock........sigh.......

There seems to me to be tremendous scope for an atmospheric Holmes movie which still sticks closely to the canon.

In some ways the director of such a movie is just as important as the leads.

I think back to Peter Weir's success with Master and Commander. An intelligent take on the Patrick O'Brian books which managed to steer a course between box office and intelligence.

BTW I agree with the regrets expressed on Jeremy Brett's passing.

He really inhabited the character - flaws and all.

"Victorian superheros, hmmm... "

yeah, swell.
they (Hollywood) turned Achilles into Batman, so why not do the same for Holmes? after all, leaving him as he is is SO last century!
the Invernessed crusader protecting Gotham by night, with his trusty sidekick by his side (note the large "W" on Watson's chest).

i suppose i'll have to see it eventually, but i am absolutely waiting until it comes out on NetFlix.

I watched the trailer, and, well...it seems like it more for the fan of blockbusters rather than the fan of Sherlock Holmes.

I was initially turned off by the idea, but after seeing a few of the trailers I think it'll be a fun movie. Completely true to the books and stories definitely not, but I'm interested to see what they do with the character; and, frankly, I'm excited to see Downey Jr. try his hand at Holmes.

Also, I sat in on a panel last week - Michael Whelan, Steven Doyle, Laurie King, Leslie Klinger, Roy Pilot - and one of them (I believe it was Klinger) said that he'd done some consulting for the movie and thought it would be pretty good.

My thoughts are: Eh.

Holmes has been around for over a century. We've had good films and bad films-- not to mention the array of pastiches. We've still got the Brett series to watch if we want something super-faithful, we've still got the books if we want the original stories. At the end of the day, this is going to be just another take on Holmes. And I'm open to a new take on Holmes. At least Watson is super-sexy for once.

And honestly, the trailer reminds me a bit of Pirates of the Caribbean, in a way. Remember how when you first heard that Disney was making a PIRATE movie? Based on that RIDE? And how ridiculous that sounded because who in THIS century would want to see a PIRATE move? And then the first trailer came out, and we all thought "Hey, this might actually be kinda good, swashbuckling fun". And then we actually saw the movie, and we all let out a collective "OMG PIRATES!!!"

So that's what I think is going to happen here. It will be a fun take on an old standby, and it may leave behind a few new converts.

"And then we actually saw the movie, and we all let out a collective "OMG PIRATES!!!""

well, maybe not ALL of us.

Do not go see this movie!!

I just saw it (had a screening pass from a cinema society I belong to).

NOTE: MAJOR SPOILER AHEAD

It's "Conan Doyle meets Dan Brown". And it's extremely violent. Honestly, there are more fisticuffs (and graphic fisticuffs) in this film than in the entire canon. There are all kinds of "perils of Pauline" moments. Mary Morstan is introduced as Watson's fiancée, but is a stranger to Holmes. And Irene Adler should sue for defamation of character (she's presented as a temptress in the employ of Moriarty!).

And I hate movies that end with the detective making a speech to the survivors in which he explicates everything and ties up all the loose ends. Whatever happened to showing rather than telling?

I knew it, I knew it, I knew it!!!!!!!!!!

How could they do that to our dear SH????

31peppermintkiwi

You know, I enjoyed the movie quite a bit more than I'd expected; it had a definite summer blockbuster feel, which is what I anticipated when I entered the theatre. I also expected the violence, so that wasn't a surprise, although I agree that they could have done with quite a bit less.

Basically, I came down on the side of "OMG PIRATES!!!"

The relationship between Watson and Holmes was interesting to watch, and there were a handful of little jokes (that only people who have read the stories would get) which made me chuckle. I also thought that Adler was presented as quite a bit more than just some seductress; I remember being pretty happy with her portrayal.

It wasn't exactly Doyle's Holmes, but I enjoyed myself and then went home to settle in with the The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes afterward :-)

I saw it too, last night. I must say that, beyond the fact that SH appears like a mix of buffoon/lunatic, I had thought the movie would be far worse.
Also, I had never seen (or read of) such an athletic Watson!
Like lilithcat, I did not like the way Irene Adler was portrayed.
Altogether, I can say that it was entertaining even though it misrepresented the character, and his qualities/defects, dear to all of us sherlockians.

I just saw the movie tonight. I was afraid I was going to hate it since I'm so attached to the Doyle writings, but it wasn't so bad. In fact, I rather enjoyed myself. I just kept telling myself: "This isn't Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. This is just someone else's version of him." Normally I get quite upset when I see a movie that's based on book(s) that I love, but I managed to talk myself out of it.
They definitely set the movie up for sequels.

I enjoyed it too. It was sort of a big Hollywood Holmes tribute to the shows and movies Holmes has influenced over the years i.e. Batman, House MD, etc.... It'll be fun to have a Sherlock Holmes movie that'll put my big plasma tv and surround sound through their paces.

I haven't seen it. The advertisements didn't seem encouraging. Hollywood: where art goes to die.

Although this movie is nothing like the detective created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Robert Downey Jr's portrayal of Sherlock Holmes cannot compare to that of Jeremy Brett, the new movie has had an important effect - edcuating young people about Sherlock Holmes.

As a teenager myself who is a devoted Sherlockian and Jeremy Brett fan, I have been somewhat dissapointed that my fellow teenagers are unaware of Sir Conan Doyle and his brilliant creation, Sherlock Holmes. However, this new movie is inspiring several of my friends to read the Canon, and one has even expressed interest in watching my Jeremy Brett collection.

Despite my qualms about the movie's interpretation of the character of Sherlock Holmes, it has certainly enlivened intrigue amongst the teenage world for him, and an interest in the books. If this is what it takes to keep the spirit alive, then I am in favor of this movie.

I was very pleased when they began showing the techniques behind the supposed mysticism. I was afraid they were going to go weird on us, but it went the proper rational direction.

I saw Holmes as more of the stereotype for the 'Irish' detective (lots of alcohol and fights), than the UK investigator who is supposed to beat up corpses to see if they bleed (the story in which Watson meets Holmes?). In any case, there is a problem in connecting the Irish drunkard (this movie)/the decadent 'fin de siècle' dandy (traditionally portrayed as the gay aesthetic wastrel) / and the ascetic scientific investigator (as, I would be more inclined to think of the character - based on Joseph Bell and the advances in scientific police work in France ):
