I am slowly working on this cataloguing of my books. I have a tremendous amount of them though. My books on shelves are stacked tight and then stacked in front of that and then wedged in where there is leftover space. Then the ones that absolutely won't fit on the shelves are stored in boxes in front of the shelves.

Is there an inexpensive alternative to having my library refitted with built-in shelving? A lot of the shelf units I have been able to find are not really sized properly for books. the shelves tend to be 12-14 inches apart, i.e. too tall, and 10-12 inches in, i.e. too deep. Plus, i have so many books, the thought of reshelving them all makes me want to cry.

Has anyone ever completely redone their library? Is there a cost efficient and easy way to go about it?

sevedra,

Have a look in http://www.librarything.com/groups/bookcasesifyoubuild

There are several threads about various kinds of options for shelving books. Some are way out of most people's price ranges, but most aren't.
