I'm currently working my way through the 999 Challenge, and need some help selecting my next book. They all look so good I can't choose one! You can see my entire 999 Challenge here, if you're interested.

In case you can't read the titles, they are:

Jamaica Inn by Daphne Du Maurier
The Remains of the Day by Kazuo Ishiguro
Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Haruki Murakami
Howards End by E.M. Forster
Tess of the D'Ubervilles by Thomas Hardy
Julie and Julia by Julie Powell
The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan
As Meat Loves Salt by Maria McCann
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt

Some good choices in there.
I've only read Tess of the D'Ubervilles which was excellent so I can definitely recommend that.

But Ishiguro and Murakami are also excellent authors so I'll nudge them as 2nd and 3rd place. :)

I like your list, but like lilisin I've only read Tess of the D'Ubervilles. and so so long ago. Definitely give it a nudge but also will nudge Jamaica Inn as Du Maurier's Rebecca is so good.

I would also nudge Tess of the D'Urbervilles - I was nudged to it last year and I agree with lilisin - it is a marvellous read.

I'd go for Remains of the Day. Short but as near perfect as a book can get in achieving what it sets out to do. Nothing he's written since has compared to this, IMHO.

I've read a few of them. I'll nudge Howard's End. It's one of my favorites!

I'll echo FlossieT and nudge Remains of the Day. It's a touching, beautiful book. Well worth reading.

This looks remarkably similar to my TBR pile. Which unfortunately means I haven't read any of them. But I would order my top 3 this way: The Omnivores Dilemma, Tess of the D'Ubervilles, and Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil.

Wow! What an amazing pile! The only ones I haven't read are Julie and Julia, The Omnivore's Dilemma and As Meat Loves Salt so can't comment on those (aren't 2 of them cookery books? I know some people read cookery books as if they were novels but I don't really get that). Anyhow - out of the others it's one hell of a tough choice because they're all amazing books. I can just about whittle it down to a top 3 - Remains of the Day, Jamaica Inn and Tess. Okay, I'll nudge Remains of the Day.
Or Tess.
Or Jamaica Inn. God, this is hard. A nudge for each one, then.
Remains of the Day.

Terrific pile, but Remains of the Day. No question about it! (Though I hear intriguing things about Omnivore's Dilemma.)

I've read a couple of those and can say that, of those I've read, there's not a bad one in the bunch. For top two, I'd say Remains of the Day and Tess of the D'Urbervilles

Well, one is always going to get nudges for classics. . . so, I'm going to nudge As Meat Loves Salt, I thought it a terrific historical novel (although I read it years ago now and don't remember many of the details).

Great choices! I'm going to nudge Howard's End and The Omnivore's Dilemma, but all the ones I've read are great, and the rest look good to me, so I doubt you'd go wrong with any of them.

I am going to nudge The Remains of the Day -great book!

Hmm, well, I am going to denudge As Meat Loves Salt; I wanted to like it but just couldn't get through it (and I'm a big historical fiction fan). I'll give a nudge to Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Howard's End and The Remains of the Day, in that order.

I've read four in the pile, and of them I would nudge:
1. Remains of the Day
2. Howard's End
Both are lovely reads with beautifully drawn characters. It's been a while since I read Howard's End, but if I had to choose, I would say Ishiguro first.

I've read three of those and can't pick because they were all fantastic in different ways: Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Remains of the Day and Omnivore's Dilemma.

OK, if I really had to pick... Remains of the Day.
Great pile of books!

I'm nudging As Meat Loves Salt. (I just put a to read/re-read piece of a post-it on my copy.)

WHAT"S RUDE ABOUT SHOUTING KIWIDOC? I SAY REMAINS OF THE DAY OR "OFF WITH HER HEAD!"

Crikey Urania! We are going to be banned to the heavens.

(But I do think she should be sent down the rabbit hole if she doesn't comply!!!!!)

No, no kiwidoc. We will just send her to the new school that has opened up on the Virago Modern Classics Forum: http://www.librarything.com/topic/56601.

The Remains of the Day and Tess! (... and not just because I was influenced by all the shouting ;P)

Wow, thanks for all the suggestions! So far, here's how the tally looks:

The Remains of the Day - 14 nudges
Tess of the D'Ubervilles - 9 nudges
Howard's End - 4 nudges
Omnivore's Dilemma - 3 nudges
Hard-boiled Wonderland - 2 nudges
Jamaica Inn - 2 nudges
Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil - 2 nudges
As Meat Loves Salt - 2 nudges + 1 denudge = 1 nudge

Looks like it's going to be Remains of the Day! Good thing, I was getting a little bit worried about what people in this thread might do to me if it wasn't chosen!

Hey, wait for me. The only one I've read is Omnivore's Dilemma. It was excellent and potentially life-changing, so make sure you read it. (Typed while watching the movie Howard's End)

sarahbird - don't be pushed about by Urania - she thinks she is an ancient Greek muse, which explains a lot.

kiwidoc,

You too could be sent to Madame Defarge's School for Deportment, Elocution, and "Knitting." Under the leadership of the renowned Dr. Urania Newton-Knitter, young ladies learn respect for the muses. Those who refuse, we "head" in the right direction.
