I came into the group to find something beyond a 100 Challenge and found this instead! Now I will have to come up with 10 categories, some of which I will take for the 2009 one and some will be new and I have some ideas. I like the open-endedness of it, too.

This will keep track of the actual number of books I read, while the posts below will keep track of the categories. This way I only have to enter the books once.

Welcome! It's a fun group to hang out with! You can always change your categories during the year to match what you're reading. Seeing people's categories is my favorite part.

I used a similar format to extend my 999 Challenge which I finished last month, but nine categories, obviously, instead of ten. I almost have that finished, too - well, in that I have read at least one book in the nine categories of my extended 999. My ninth category should be finished August 25, I hope, but I have already read around 20 books for that challenge. I just love to read and seem to pick up one back after I have finished another.

#15 if you're referring to the one over in the book talk group, I think it's still semi-active. At least I still see posts there occasionally. It's been going a long time!

I did civil war category in the 999 and found it to be one of the hardest categories - but enjoyable. I really had to make an effort to go find books to read - and ended up reading a lot of things I'd never have seen otherwise. I will be watching for all your civil war books next year.

18koalamom
aug 26, 2009, 8:45 am

I know about the Civil War thread - I started it, but I just figured new year - new thread.

I have been enjoying the Civil Wat books, especially when I started including books with the Civil War as background and not just books about the battles. The people are interesting, too.

19koalamom

On 9/28 I added Revolutionary War to my Civil War category because I noticed that I have a number of books about that war on my shelves and also thought I'd break out and try something "new."

Hi Koalamom, we share some of the same categories - mystery, fantasy and YA - so I will be interested to see how you fill in those categories in particular. I'm looking forward to January and the start of this challenge.

21koalamom
okt 2, 2009, 8:40 am

me, too - to both questions

picking out books is "like eating from a box of chocolates" as I misquote that famous line - you never know what you are going to feel like reading and you never know how a book is going to affect you - you may love i t before you read and find it's terrible or read it begrudgingly and find a new friend

four books as of today and four different categories

how long before I add a second book to a category but still have categories to fill?

26AHS-Wolfy
jan 13, 2010, 9:50 am

In some ways it's nice to have so many options to pick from but it's also difficult in narrowing the choice down to what to read next. I've also taken the What category haven't I touched yet approach.

27koalamom
jan 14, 2010, 8:46 am

I'll do that, too. I already know that I have a couple of book son my reading table that will go into the same category - just not sure yet which, but they are library books so I have to read them and get them back.

28koalamom
Redigerat: jan 17, 2010, 7:55 am

As of today I have read 6 books each in a different category. I have two books on my table and both will be second books in two of the categories. I have decided to get one book from each of the four remaining and put them on my table, thus completing my only rule of at least one in each category though I do hope that I can actually read more than one in each.

57koalamom
aug 30, 2010, 8:20 am

I read 15 books in August.
I need only 45 books to make 150 by the end of the year.
I only need one more book in 19th century authors to make it six that I have read in all ten categories.
I then need one book in four categories to make it seven in each. I may not make ten in each but I am going to get as close as I can, but I will make the 150 books for the year (only need 11 a month plus 1).

58koalamom
aug 31, 2010, 1:05 pm

Make that 16 books in August and only 44 left to make 150 for the year. I think I am obsessing here. Do I read too much? I should be able to reach my goal - maybe even surpass it.

It's good to hear someone say that. The only one I know, personally, who reads more than me is my son - I guess he's a chip off the old block - and it's generational - my mom was always reading, too - sometimes 6 or 7 at a time - she'd just line them up and read what hit her fancy at that moment!

61DeltaQueen50
sep 1, 2010, 1:56 pm

It runs in my family too, my Mom is a huge reader and all three of us kids are readers as well. I have a daughter who loves reading and a step-daughter who I have introduced to reading and now always has a book on the go. We are trying to introduce the kids to as many books as we can in the hope of more readers in the family. I think it is such a gift, you are never alone when you have a book in your hand.

62koalamom
sep 2, 2010, 4:31 pm

As of yesterday - 10/10/10 - I have completed reading eight books in each of my ten categories.

I have two categories where I only need one more book to finish 10, which I may be able to do, and three others that require two more to make ten. I am not pushing myself to do so and am more interested in completing 150 - and actually think I have done pretty good!

We shall see.

As of this date I only need to read 17 books to complete my quest of 150 books by the end of 2010.

I also only need two more books from my categories 19th century authors (and I have one on my table) and Classic (again one is on my table) and I need one more from my category representing 19th and 19th Century America.

Maybe I can make both goals happen?

October - 16 books read

I now have only 16 books to read to make 150 and that would mean 8 books for each of the next two months - shouldn't be too hard

I have three categories left to read two books each in to make it ten for each category - this would be nice but I am not going to worry about it - I have one book of each on my table to read so I will make it to nine in each category

12 books to 150 and only one book in three categories to complete my 10-10-10 Challenge and I have those on my table right now

Not long ago I didn't feel I would finish the 10-10-10 and now I'll do it before the end of November,

11 to go for 150

just 1 more book each in two different categories to finish my 10-10-10 and I am a third of the way through one of those - should have this part done very soon and I should go over 150

I read a lot, like most but then can't remember half of them later on! I guess I enjoy for the moment.

10 to go to the 150th

and only one category that needs its tenth book and that is already half finished and should be done by the end of the week

I didn't think I'd finish the category challenge but never had doubts of finishing the 150 books in 2010.

9 to go to make 150 - finished two in one day - well the last was short, but seasonal

8 - well, actually I decided that the book I was claiming is really just a part of a three book volume written by the same author

after putting Candy Cane Murder in with Laura Levine as author, I discovered it just pointed to the one with Joanne Fluke and Leslie Meier (same person???) so I will count Candy Cane Murder as one book of three parts and leave it at that
so as of right now it's still 9 to go

this time it is 8 left to read, for sure and with a little twist of a category name I have completed the 10/10/10 category

I discovered that I actually have an eleventh category here - Early Reviewers - and I have read 10 books in that category read as of this date and the eleventh almost finished, to be added soon. I have marked these book (ER) in their respective "other" categories.

somehow I forgot to mention 5 to go and now it's 4 to go with one on the table and one waiting for me at the library - dare I think that I can actually make 150 before the end of November, but I am a pessimist

And let it be known that on November 25, 2010 Thanksgiving Day (night actually) I finished my 150th book for the year 2010 - and will continue to read, of course - and the last book was a Fantasy

and now on to 160?

and here's number 151 - all December books are extra

93koalamom

as of dec 21 - 10 books past 150 and 5 are non-fiction

94koalamom
dec 27, 2010, 3:14 pm

Entered book 163 which may also be the last book I read for 2010 - my six non-fiction of December no less- but it was about Dewey - a cat

This will make 13 books for December and 163 for the year - unless I do mange to read one more but no more than that - then onto 2011

there will be no limits/no goals in 2011 - just a recording of what I have read in a particular month - I want to read because I like the books, not to meet a goal which may make me read to the goal and not for the pleasure of the book

this time, definitely, last book for 2010 - 164 for year and 14 for December and a lot of non-fiction

joining LT has definitely broadened my reading selections
