I am just starting to log in my books, and need some guidance on tagging. What would you start with? Is there a standard list somewhere that will help me catagorize?

Tagging is a personal aspect of LT, however to get some ideas for tags you can go to the LT Tag cloud to get a few.

I can share what I do but I haven't perfected it yet. Any books we may use for each time period has one of these tags:

Ancients 5000-400AD
Middle Ages 400-1600
Late Renaissance 1600-1850
Modern Times 1850-1994

I messed up with the Modern Times one-it should be Modern Times 1850- but I'll fix it later. It can be fixed with PowerEdit.

I also tag any book fiction or non-fiction that is intended for children-children's literature.

Science : earth science, life science, physics, chemistry
and I add tags that I would use to search for the title.

If you choose to have your home library mimic a public library, the Dewey Decimal number is on the same page as the ISBN number, as well as the Dewey description of the book. I've been contemplating doing that as well.

Religion is a tricky one b/c there's so many different descriptions: I went with Religion and spirituality and then tagged more if I felt I needed to.

Hope this helps!
Jessica

Feel free to check out my library (tags) - it is not perfect yet, I'm still working on it.

For Tags I like to look at the Cataloging in publication data - some good ideas there. Also look at the Dewey number and that can give you s subject that goes with the book. Jim

These are helpful. Now, to get going. Plus, I'm almost at the 200 book limit and have to make *that* decision. My 11yo has opened his own library account, and finds this all very fascinating. My 8yo wants to open one, too, but I think she has only about 6 books in her own personal collection :o)

I'm pretty sure there is an age limit for LT. I think it is twelve.

http://www.librarything.com/privacy.php

"The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) severely restricts what information can be collected from children under 13. For this reason, children under 13 are prohibited from using LibraryThing. Children 13 and over may participate with the permission and guidance of their parent or guardian."

But if you combine the collections, that might encourage you to become a full member :)
