ANDORRA!!!!!??????

Help. I am doing the countries alphabetically and Andorra is next. I've tried searching Andorra on several groups, lists, forums, etc. and I just keep getting it popping up as a country, but no help what so ever as to what to read. Does ANYONE know of ANY book, by an author, expat, or setting having anything to do with Andorra?

Andorra is pretty damn tricky indeed. I have two suggestions, however.

Max Frisch wrote an absurdist play called Andorra. It's really an allegory over german anti-semitism before the nazi take-over, and the Andorra in the play is ficitve. But I remember the play as pretty readable when I read it at university many years ago, and a lot of Frisch's other stuff is excellent. It might be worth checking out, if you're willing to be a little flexible when it comes to sense of place.

My other suggestion I know virtually nothing about. But after a little googling and checking of web bookstores, I found an old novel by a Henry E. Harris. It's apparently from 1899 and called The king of Andorra, but got reprinted as late as 2008! It's even available through Amazon. Harris seems to be American, and I've no idea as how much of the action is actually about Andorra. The first few pages seemed fun in a whimsical sort of way, though!

Andorra by Peter Cameron looks like it would work. I also found an out-of-print non-fiction book, The Road to Andorra by Shirley Deane, that I think I would like better. I ordered a used copy from Amazon.

If you click on "Search" in the upper right hand corner and put Andorra in the Tags search, you'll find dozens of titles - including Report from Practically Nowhere which may be a last ditch book to cover all of the obscure countries we are going to have to cover in this challenge (personally, I'm not using more than one book per country - but there's nothing saying that I can't use it for one country and than change it if I find another book to cover that category).

I know nothing about any book on the list, but at least it opens some options. I've been stressing about hitting this country too - so so far, I've just skipped it. I applaud your dedication to reading them "in order".

I'd identified Andorra by Peter Cameron to read. I'm disappointed to hear that its descriptions may not be very accurate, but the library doesn't have much else, except travel guides and atlases.

Das Lächeln der Erde (La sonrisa de la tierra) by Ramón Villeró was the only non-spanish/-catalan book I could find by an Andorran author (a novel about a bedouin boy from the Mali deserts). Worldcat says there are no english translations... (http://www.worldcat.org/search?q=au%3A%22Villero%CC%81%2C+Ramo%CC%81n%22&qt=hot_author). But that might not be the last word on it.

I just read that one of Rose Macaulay's novels is partially set in Andorra. The reference I saw didn't name the novel, so I did a little digging. It appears to be Crewe Train.

Not likely to get to Andorra anytime soon, but it's extremely cool that this the slimmest of threads actually lives!

I was afraid to recommend this book before I'd read it. It's out of print and it looks like I have the only copy on LibraryThing. Now that I've read it, I highly recommend The Road to Andorra by Shirley Deane. It's a travel autobiography about the author's family, who live for several months in Andorra, then several more months in Ibiza. It includes lots of interesting facts about Andorran history and culture, and lots of humorous stories about the family's experiences there.

Just happened upon your thread as I am doing a global reading challenge & had to skip Andorra because I have set myself the rule that the author must be born in the country for it to qualify for my challenge.............might have to make an exception for Andorra!
