Hi! I am looking for a good comprehensive historical account of the social history of the 1960's - the music, TV shows, social movements, etc.

Any recommendations?

Thank you!

Welcome to the Dreamhouse (not loading, sorry) by Lynn Spigel is an interesting study of popular postwar media - she writes about comics, television and popular shows, the space race, architecture, even Barbie. The time frame is a little more broad than just the 60s, but the majority of the chapters deal largely with that decade, so it might be worth looking into.

Science fiction often lent itself to a reflection of the those times. Accounts of the history of science fiction through the 60s can be found in sections of Understanding Contemporar American Science Fiction or Science Fiction: an illustrated encyclopedia or Science Fiction Illustrated Encyclopeida...

Since I've liked other books by Mark Kurlansky so much, I picked up 1968: the year that rocked the world from the library. Haven't started it yet, but am loooking forward to it. Has anyone read this? Any thoughts?

Sorry. I replied to Mrstreme before I read the entire thread. I read 1968 two or three years ago. I thought it was exceptionally good. I also read Salt, and enjoyed it.

I just picked up The Columbia Guide to America in the 1960s by Farber and Bailey at the library. The first part of the book contains short essays covering the highlights of the '60s. The second part contains a timeline and data on everything from population to music.
