The brutally ugly glass facade building (Sweden's "Palast der Republik") was planned in 1962, architected in 1965, built 1971-1974. In between, popular protests grew against the destruction of the old city centre. The triangular chequered square outside is named after 18th century sculptor Tobias Sergel.
