- The Athenaeum is one of only 16 nonprofit membership libraries in the country — one of only two in the Western United States. Before the advent of publicly funded libraries in the mid-19th century, membership libraries provided the only library resources for most communities. America’s first membership library, the Library Company of Philadelphia, was founded by Benjamin Franklin in 1731. The idea of an “Athenaeum” developed in the early 19th century as a center for the study and enjoyment of literature and the arts, with a reading room, art gallery, and cultural programs.
As a founding member of the national Membership Libraries Group, La Jolla’s Athenaeum maintains relations with venerable sister institutions such as the Boston Athenaeum, the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, and the New York Society Library.
The specific mission of the Athenaeum is to provide the La Jolla and San Diego communities with library resources in music and the arts, and an ongoing schedule of classes, concerts and exhibitions.
The Athenaeum makes a unique collection of art and music resources available to the community, and features several special collections. It houses the largest circulating CD collection in San Diego, and the DVD and video collection emphasizes not only art and music topics, but winners of all major film awards. The Children’s Book Collection features all Caldecott Medal winners since 1938, many of them autographed first editions. Equally impressive are the LP and sheet music collections. The crown jewel is the Athenaeum’s Erika and Fred Torri Artists' Books Collection. In 1991, the library began collecting special or limited edition books created by artists, with an emphasis on Southern California, as well as artists’ books that are conceptual in nature, from internationally recognized artists.
