This was my second time through Gravity's Rainbow. After my first read, I ruled that it's the sort of book that's like nasty medicine -- good for you but it's hard to get down. This was still the case with GR for me, but to a lesser degree. Better oriented and with Steven Weisenburger's companion in hand, I was much better equipped to like the book this time around. There's still much about GR that baffles me, but it's such an ambitious book that it's hard not to admire the work in spite of any confusion and frustration.

Before I read it again (and I will), I think I'll get some more Rilke under my belt (read some of Rilke in college but wasn't a great fan and probably didn't do him justice) and maybe study up on the White Goddess mythology a bit more. ( )

If you like this kind of book, you'll love this one; if you don't, you won't.

It is a rambling, non-linear, non-plot driven story based in the immediate post ww2 period in Europe, with the v2/a4 rocket program as a central element. Lots of graphic sex, drugs, and frequent sidetracking into technology or historical stuff.

As an audiobook, this edition was excellent. I would have finished it in text, but it was great for multiple long car rides. ( )

I gave up. Probably less than 100 pages in. It's just too obtuse. This is the first novel I've picked up in a long, long time and mainly on the vauge cultural sense that it was an "important book." That's probably a poor reason for picking a book. I didn't realize it was about World War II or V2, which makes that fact that I just can't get into it fairly puzzling. And I was an English major! I should be enjoying the meandering oblique style. But it was just annoying. One run on paragraph-length sentence after another with the feeling that if I only read every other word I would get just as much meaning as reading the full sentence or the opposite every-other-word. As I said before there are books and there are Books. This is a Book.

This is nothing that can read through with only half your brain active. This needs your full concentration. A complex multi level story with an english level some other authors should really take a note from. A wonderful read, but a really hard read. There are parts where I really had to re-read some pages because I just got completely lost somewhere in sub metaphors and other side tracked part.

But when I was in the zone, the pages just ran by. It was wonderful. I fully enjoyed, especially as it did not suffer from the often problematic Book ending that often has either no end or some really shitty end. This End was great.

Would I recommend this. Well, are you willing to work when reading? Like be really concentrated. Are you willing to not 100% understand what actually is going on and are you willing to accept that you probably will never be able to decipher all the meanings in there. Well, if yes, then go for it.

If not, I think skipping this is better than forcing yourself through this book.

I truly enjoyed and I will read further novels from this author. Wonderful. ( )

There’s a dirty secret tucked away in Thomas Pynchon’s novels, and it’s this: beyond all the postmodernism and paranoia, the anarchism and socialism, the investigations into global power, the forays into labor politics and feminism and critical race theory, the rocket science, the fourth-dimensional mathematics, the philatelic conspiracies, the ’60s radicalism and everything else that has spawned 70 or 80 monographs, probably twice as many dissertations, and hundreds if not thousands of scholarly essays, his novels are full of cheesy love stories.

Those who have read Thomas Pynchon’s Gravity’s Rainbow know that those 700+ pages add up to more than just a novel; it’s an experience. The hundreds of characters are difficult to follow, the plot is nonsensical, sex is graphically depicted, drugs are smoked out of a kazoo and a poor light bulb goes through many humiliating experiences. But the brilliance of Gravity’s Rainbow is not in spite of its oddness but because of it.

Like one of his main characters, Pynchon in this book seems almost to be "in love, in sexual love, with his own death." His imagination--for all its glorious power and intelligence--is as limited in its way as Céline's or Jonathan Swift's. His novel is in this sense a work of paranoid genius, a magnificent necropolis that will take its place amidst the grand detritus of our culture. Its teetering structure is greater by far than the many surrounding literary shacks and hovels. But we must look to other writers for food and warmth.

This classic hustle is still famous, even today, for the cold purity of its execution: bring opium from India, introduce it into China – howdy Fong, this here's opium, opium, this is Fong – ah, so, me eatee! – no-ho-ho, Fong, you smokee, [smokee], see? pretty soon Fong's coming back for more and more, so you create an inelastic demand for the shit, get China to make it illegal, then sucker China into a couple-three disastrous wars over the right of your merchants to sell opium, which by now you are describing as sacred. You win, China loses. Fantastic.
A former self is a fool, an insufferable ass, but he's still human, you'd no more turn him out than you'd turn out any other kind of cripple, would you?
They'll always tell you fathers are 'taken,' but fathers only leave – that's what it really is. The fathers are all covering for each other, that's all.
If they can get you asking the wrong questions, they don’t have to worry about the answer.
