A Kinsey Millhone mystery. When Laurence Fife was murdered, few mourned his passing. Plenty of people had reason to want him dead. But the police thought his wife Nikki - with motive, access and opportunity - was the #1 suspect. The jury thought so too. Eight years later and out on parole, Nikki hires Kinsey Millhone, a gutsy P.I., to find the real killer. The trail is cold but Kinsey finds a lead. It brings her face-to-face with the murderer! This is the first in the popular series featuring California investigator Kinsey Millhone. She's 32, twice divorced, no kids, an ex-cop who likes her work ... and who works strictly alone!… (mer)

A is for Alibi is the first book in Sue Grafton's alphabet mystery series,
Kinsey Millhone a 32-year-old Private Investigator living in California. I have just started this series, but I really enjoyed this book. The mystery keeps pages turning as it fascinating, suspenseful and a real fast read. The character Kinsey is very independent, you feel as you now know her, and she is portrayed as somebody you do know. Nikki Fife has just been released from prison after doing 8 years for the murdering her husband, Laurence. Nikki wants Kinsey to find the person who really killed Laurence Kinsey begins to investigate and finds out about another murder committed only days after Laurence's that is extremely similar. The victim was the accountant for Laurence's law firm, Libby Glass, and she was killed using an identical method of poisoning. This trail is 8-years-old, and Kinsey knows it won't be easy to find the truth. Kinsey begins to put together a picture of the people involved and the circumstances that led up to Laurence's murder. But somebody is not too pleased with Kinsey investigating and unveiling facts that could lead to the true murderer. Kinsey gets herself into danger, and as she struggles to put the pieces together, someone is trying to stop ( )

This is series that I enjoy over and over -- and I have never read one of the books. I listened to them instead. The abridged audio books are read by Judy Kaye and to me she "IS" Kinsey Millhone. What makes the series is the character of Kinsey Millhone who just happens to solve problems for people.

Kinsey is twice divorced and lives a very simple life in a garage apartment. She is a private investigator and very resourceful, placing facts on index cards (something that I used to do with research) and digging deeper until the case is solved. Grafton has a way with words as she writes in the first person, bringing Kinsey's narrative to life. And I love her garage apartment.

Great beginning to the series. Read them in order for a better understanding of the character's development. Everytime a new title comes out, I start the series over. My favorites are B IS FOR BURGLAR and L IS FOR LAWLESS. NOTE: I stopped at "Q" and haven't really been drawn to finish the series since my interest has moved on to other genres. (07/26/19)

Some sex and strong language.

Last lines of the book: ...The shooting disturbs me still. It has moved me into the same camp with soldiers and maniacs. I never set out to kill anyone...I'll recover, of course. I'll be ready for business again in a week or two, but I'll never be the same. You try to keep life simple but it never works, and in the end all you have left is yourself. -- Respectfully submitted, Kinsey Millhone."

Some violence, strong language and some explicit descriptions of sex. ( )

I read A through Y and was so sad when I was done. Kinsey kept me company for a while. I'm not sure I loved Grafton's experimentation with shifting points of view towards the end, but I think it's good she tried something a little different. ( )

The first book in the Kinsey Millhone series. Though I love the series, the first book did have some issues. I think at times the book's flow got a bit rough. And the characters are not very developed yet. Grafton gives a short description of Kinsey. It takes a lot of books to find out about her last, how she came to live with her aunt, and her past marriages. Getting the build up to all of that is wonderful though.

Kinsey at the time of his book is 32 and twice divorced. A private investigator who is able to pay the bills. She is hired by a woman who was convicted of murdering her husband. The woman claimed she is innocent and wants to find out who really killed her husband. Kindly ends up investigating this and another case of a young woman who also died by the same means.

We get broad strokes to other characters we will get to know later on the series like Henry Pitts, Rosie, and Lieutenant Dolan. I do wish we had a chance to spend more time with them in this first book, but Grafton focuses on the case that Kinsey is working as well as a romance that comes out of nowhere.

The writing was really good. Though as I said the flow was a bit off towards the end. I recall reading this the first time and being shocked by how the two cases were wrapped up. It's been years since I read this, so even this time I found myself pleasantly surprised again.

I enjoy the setting of Santa Teresa and it sounds ideal at times. The series takes place here and though the years may change, Santa Teresa is the main setting.

Kinsey goes through a life changing event in this one, that scars her a bit going into B is for Burglar. ( )

A few years ago I went through a period of wondering whether people at tram stops ever spontaneously decide to kill themselves by jumping in front of a tram as it arrives. I mean, would a person be thinking one moment of whether to have his lunch before or after dashing to JB HiFi in his break, or whether or not he's remembered his memory stick, and then - just like that - jump? I've never seen any data.

Contemplating the issue made me stand further back than was strictly speaking necessary while waiting for trams....as I stood there I'd wonder if I was being neurotic or sensible.

It was, therefore, with some relief that around that time I read one of the Kinsey books and she does exactly the same thing. Stands rather further back than she needs to in case she finds she has an impulse to jump. Kinsey is sensible as. A good person to have on your side. ( )
