Why should I be beneath Fitzwilliam? I am just as handsome as he is; I am just as intelligent, even though he works harder at his books; and I am just as amusing; in fact I dare say I am a great deal more amusing, for Fitzwilliam is so proud he will not take the trouble to entertain other people.

Yet although he is no better than me, when he grows up he will inherit Pemberley, and I will inherit nothing...

Jane Austen's ultimate bad boy finally gets his say. Face with an uncertain future??while his friend Fitzwilliam Darcy is set for life??dastardly George Wickham plots and cavorts in this rollicking prequel to Pride and Prejudice. Bestselling author Amanda Grange daringly explores the inner turmoil and secret motivations of the character every Austen fan loves to hate...

Praise for Mr. Darcy's Diary:
"Grange tells Darcy's story in her own style, with charm and a gentle wit. While her characters are true to Austen's creations, a couple of surprises lurk, only adding to the reader's pleasure."??Susan Higginbotham, author of The Traitor's

I put aside my negativity about Jane Austen and all the hoopla surrounding her works (including Pride and Prejudice) to check out Wickham's Diary, which seemed like it might be a delightful piece of fluff that would include ingredients from Gossip Girl, Edith Wharton, and American Psycho. I was sadly disappointed that it turned out to be a bit of a flat read that didn't allow me to connect with Wickham. All the elements were there (i.e. envy, scheming, overbearing mum) but they didn't gel.

The thoughts and actions of George Wickham from when he was a lad in 1784 up to deciding to join the militia.
A very easy, well-written story which I enjoyed reading the evolution of Wickham's character but I would have liked it to continue up to and past his marriage to Lydia. ( )

This short novel is the story of George Wickham and how he went from a youth living and thriving at Pemberley to the somewhat villainous man we read about in Pride and Prejudice. However, the story does not continue to explore the story of Pride and Prejudice as many of the other in this series do. It stops short and feels forced in many places. The characters are usually painted in a light to make the reader enjoy them even more but in this one, Wickham is unlikeable from the beginning. ( )

Wickham's Diary is a short novel telling the story of Wickham, before he met the Bennets, from his own perspective. While the book is kind of fun to read, I wasn't impressed or surprised by it. I would have expected to see a new side of the villain or get a slight chance of perception about him. Unfortunately, none of these things happened. I would only recommend reading this book if you are familiar with Pride and Prejudice and are looking for a light and fluffy reading snack. ( )

We are on record as being a big fan of Grange’s hero diaries, but we actually want to know what they are thinking. But Wickham? Really? We don’t want him to be redeemed or made sympathetic. He is a bad man.

Fortunately, Grange resists any temptation to make Wickham terribly sympathetic. He is spoiled, vain, selfish, and hedonistic, just as he ought; but he also is rather amusing, and really, how did he go from being Fitzwilliam Darcy’s “companion of my youth” to someone seeking complete revenge on him, as well as monetary gain, by cutting up poor Georgiana Darcy’s peace? We were hesitant, but this one had us by the second page, buckled up for a bumpy ride.
