Big Nate: In You Face is another great addition to the Big Nate series by author Lincoln Pierce. Our 10-year-old son has been reading these for several years now, and they are always one of his first choices from his bookshelf.

He enjoys the relatable characters and scenarios, quirky humor, and engaging plotlines. Big Nate: In Your Face has all the diverse chracters he has grown to love, and the predictable yet important middle grade issues he can relate to and also learn from.

The humor works perfectly for it's intended audience and the storyline keeps it's reader engaging until the very last page. As a parent who is hoping to instill a lifelong long of reading, book series like Big Nate are a reminder that the most important thing you can do for young readers is engage them and show them there really is a genre of books for everyone.

Thank you to Andrews McNeel Publishing for my gifted copy in exchange for a honest review. ( )

One of my students caught me reading this and they were SOOO excited to see a teacher reading the same stuff THEY read. So, I decided to take the opportunity to ask a few students why they enjoy Big Nate. I was met with blank stares. "Well...ummmm..."
Me: If you don't like it, why do you read it?
Her: Because it's fast. We get more points for more books, so we can get quick points.
Her fellow students: *nods and murmurs of agreement*

Ah. That makes so much sense. ( )

My introduction to Nate Wright was the "In a Class By Himself" chapter book. At that time, I did not know he first appeared as a comic series. This book is a collection of strips which appeared from August 2006 through April 2007. Funny and good supplemental reading, if you are a Big Nate fan.
Calvin and Hobbs are the benchmark for me. These comics are Calvin and Hobbs without Calvin's imagination nor his crazy parents. While Nate's father has his moments, he pales in comparison to Calvin's father, the camping enthusiast. ( )

Amazon Product Description:
Big Nate, a.k.a. middle schooler Nate Wright, is eleven years old, four-and-a-half feet tall, and the wunderkind creation of cartoonist Lincoln Peirce. Nate is also the star of six novelized books to be published by HarperCollins, the first of which debuted on the New York Times children's best-seller list. This Big Nate Collection collects Peirce's Big Nate strips, originally published only in newspapers.

For those not familiar with Big Nate, think Diary of a Wimpy Kid meets Calvin and Hobbes. Nate is a self-described genius and a sixth-grade Renaissance man equipped with only a #2 pencil and the unshakable belief that he is destined for greatness (a fortune cookie told him so). He fights a daily battle against overzealous teachers, undercooked cafeteria food, and all-around conventionality. He's the original rebel without a clue, alternately abrasive and endearing to classmates and teachers alike. Throughout Peirce's Big Nate Collection, Nate blazes an unforgettable trail through the sixth grade at P.S. 38, earning straight As in laughs (and numerous detentions) along the way.

This is the third book I have read about Nate and his adventures. This is a funny and entertaining series. It has appeal for fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid and parents will feel better about Nate than they do Greg. Nate is a lovable and redeeming character. I like Greg Hefley, but as a parent, he is certainly not someone I would want my child to hang out with.

A must for any library's graphic novel collection.
Recommended for 3rd Grade and up.
