Since the end of the Second World War many thousands of books have been published about the exploits of spies on nothing more substantive than a fertile imagination and access to some very dubious historical records. Several of these more implausible tales have, however, gained wide circulation, and a few have even been endorsed by respectable historians and supposedly expert commentators. Nigel West has accumulated nearly two dozen books, some written by hitherto respected academics, which have been accepted as genuine contributions to Britain's secret history.
