This is a fictional story about a boy who had a magical experience with Monarch butterflies. One day he watched a swarm of butterflies. They began to whisper to him that they needed help. They couldn't find a place to call home because some trucks had destroyed their home to build buildings. They then turned him into a butterfly so he could show them a way to a new field. Eventually he was turned back into a boy and went on to do research about butterflies and how to help them. This fictional story brings up the topic of habitat loss. I would read this book after reading the nonfictional book about butterflies. We would talk about the fictional aspects of the butterflies in this story but also the truth about habitat loss. I enjoyed this book because it was entertaining and personified the butterflies so you felt emotions and were drawn to help them. Its a good way to introduce students to environmental issues. ( )

This book is about a boy named John who discovers butterflies. During the migration process, John begins to have a deeper understanding for the butterflies. The rest of the book is the discovery of the migration process and the butterflies allow John into this process.

This book is about a boy who wakes up two days after his birthday and discovers that there is a migration of monarch butterflies passing through. He then connects with the butterflies and learns that where they are migrating to has been demolished and is under construction. ( )

This book is about this boy named John Farrington who helps a flock of butterflies find a safe place to rest and recuperate. Every spring since his eleventh birthday he led the butterflies to a safe place to rest and stay. As he grew up, the butterflies stoped visiting him, but he still thought about them. He made sure to pass a law where there would be a path for butterflies to rest and recuperate.

I would use this book to pair with a informational text to deepen understanding of monarch butterflies and to just bring in a different type of text for the unit. I can see this being used during a butterfly unit. This book is about monarch butterflies migrating and meeting a young boy that wanted to save them. When the butterflies come back from migrating, their homes are gone, and the boy has to figure out a new place for the butterflies to live. Grade: 2-4 ( )
