Body and soul. The song. That's what London constable and sorcerer's apprentice Peter Grant first notices when he examines the corpse of Cyrus Wilkins, part-time jazz drummer and full-time accountant, who dropped dead of a heart attack while playing a gig at Soho's 606 Club. The notes of the old jazz standard are rising from the body-a sure sign that something about the man's death was not at all natural but instead supernatural.Body and soul-they're also what Peter will risk as he investigates a pattern of similar deaths in and around Soho. With the help of his superior officer, Detective Chief Inspector Thomas Nightingale, the last registered wizard in England, and the assistance of beautiful jazz aficionado Simone Fitzwilliam, Peter will uncover a deadly magical menace-one that leads right to his own doorstep and to the squandered promise of a young jazz musician: a talented trumpet player named Richard "Lord" Grant-otherwise known as Peter's dear old dad.… (mer)

Aaronovitch, Ben. Moon over Soho. Rivers of London No. 2. Del Rey, 2011.
Moon over Soho is a close sequel to Midnight Riot, and it shows that Aaronovitch is in it for the long hall in this series. He is carefully developing nuanced characters and not letting too many of the magic bunnies out of the hat at one time. In this one police constable and wizard’s apprentice Peter Grant is investigating the murder by magic of jazz musicians all over London. They tend to die on stage and have the magic life force sucked from their bodies. There are jazz vampires? Well, what jazz fan would not say yes to that? The plotting is careful, and the London detail is impressive. This series has me hooked. ( )

I've found the best Urban Fantasy novels are also great detective novels, except instead of ballistics, DNA testing, and the other tools of the science detectives trade that Sherlock Holmes & the like bust out, there's magic. The Peter Grant novels succeed at this fantastically. Aaronovitch creates excellent characters and riveting mysteries that really pull you in. ( )

I read "Moon Over Soho" by Ben Aaronovitch for the "Magical Realism" square.

Please note that some things mentioned below may spoil the events in book #1.

"Moon Over Soho" is the second book in the Peter Grant series. Due to a lot of us participating in Halloween bingo are reading this book, I am just going to keep this to a high level review.

First, I really liked all of the characters (Peter, Leslie, Nightingale, Peter's mom and dad, the jazz band guys).

Peter though I found to be way more than a little naive in this one. And I don't know, I found myself irritated with him for just not realizing something that I picked up on at a good 50 percent of the book. Don't want to spoil for others, but let's just say I was the least surprised person ever when a reveal popped up.

I wanted more of Leslie in this one. After the events in book #1, Leslie is laying low and trying to put her life and her poor face back together. I don't get it, I thought that Peter was a bit thoughtless towards her character. Now that she's not attractive anymore it seems he lost interest. Which doesn't speak well of him. I have to think more on that.

We do get some nice asides to Peter's family and his mother and father I found to be very cute together. I also liked Peter's commentary on black female hair (it's all true).

The writing was really good and just like in book #1 I laughed. One particular scene with Peter telling Nightingale that calling someone a black wizard was offensive towards black people was funny. Poor Nightingale. Can we please get a side story about his days before he joined the police?

The flow dragged for me in this though. Probably because as I said, I realized where the story was going after a lot of clues where laid out. I just got fed up with Peter for not being that smart. Also his complaining about magical training is getting old. Either suck it up, or don't do it anymore.

The ending left us with a little surprise and I wonder how that will play out in future books. ( )

Must love jazz.

Well, not really, but I could almost taste the love for jazz throughout this novel. Peter's dad was once a jazz legend, after all, and so it's not so hard to have his son pick up a bit of the love, if not the talent. This aspect of the novel was pretty nigh awesome. :) Flitting around the London Jazz scene, hunting down Jazz vampires... you know, those pesky varmints that nest in the musician's ear and suck out their brains and make them do really stupid things...

Or something like that. Maybe Jazz people are naturally messed up. But that doesn't mean that there aren't Jazz Vampires!

This second book in the series is spot on and very cool in the character department. There's less of the tropes and more of being a damn fine human being. The opening of the novel highlights this. I think I'd give it ten stars all by itself. Less guilt and more being a good friend. Hell yeah. :)

The rest of the novel runs like a jazz song... smooth, reoccurring riffs, and a baseline that, while not always steady, always came back into fine form.

That, and it's a great police procedural.. um... JAZZ POLICE... and magician-in-training novel. :) I continue to be very impressed. This is some of the very best detail-oriented and depth-of-character Urban Fantasies I've ever read, and I admit to having read a TON.

Totally recommend. ( )

“Would you like me to arrest you?” I asked. That’s an old police trick, if you warn people they often just ignore you but ask them a question – then they have to think. Once they start to think about the consequences they almost always calm down, unless they're drunk of course, or stoned, or aged between fourteen and twenty-one, or Glaswegian.
She opened her eyes. They were still blue. They were still Leslie's eyes. I tried to stay focused on those eyes.
"What do you think?" she said.
"I've seen worse," I said.
"Liar," she said. "Like who?"
"Your dad," I said.
It wasn't funny but I could see she appreciated the effort.
"Do you think you'll get used to it?"
"Get used to what?"
"My face," she said.
"You're always talking about your face, you know," I said. "You're just too vain. You need to think about other people instead of yourself all the time."
When you're a musician, Free is a magic number.
