Stories about villains have to offer something really special to win me over. This book doesn't. It's antihero is insanely driven, fearless, bold, and most importantly unerringly lucky in the way that book's protagonists usually are. He is also relentlessly selfish, sadistic, and gleefully evil. The audacity and scale of his awfulness is entertaining, but I don't see how it would sustain my already flagging interest over another volume.

I've never loved a Fantasy that uses a Post-Apocalyptic Earth as its setting, and this one didn't change my mind.

Jorg Ancrath is a murderer. A rapist. Proficient though not expert in torture. And he would like very much to be Emperor. But first, he has to become a king. This is dark fantasy at its most delicious best, and several other reviews have been written which are probably better than this one. I will just answer a couple common points of complaint. 1. Jorg is not a nice person. If you need your protaganists to be nice, or at least decent company, Jorg's story is not for you. I don't think the book glorifies Jorg's depravity. Jorg is telling his own tale (and telling it wry and well! - "It's not the done thing to set to bloody slaughter at tourney," has to be among my most favorite observations to come out of the mouth of any narrator), but he has surprisingly good self awareness much of the time, all things considered. Lord Acton is useful here (not just that power corrupts, but the rest of the quote which gets dropped): "Great men are almost always bad men." 2. Some reviewers have also found it implausible how often Jorg lucks into his victories. To me, this was also more feature than bug. 'Great' men may be great more because they were in the right place at the right time and happenstance went their way. Jorg isn't rising through the ranks on his own merit. Rather, he rises because he has the will to power to rise and an appetite for violence, and things happen to fall into place around him. (He happens to mostly buy his own propoganda here, but I believe he has a comeuppance on the way down the road.) So, final verdict, I finished this book in two days and really enjoyed it. (Beautiful world building, but I don't know how to say more about that without spoiling.) ( )

"This is what happens when the consequences of children fighting in wars comes home to roost."

I can't believe I have waited this long to read this book. When I found out this was going to be, at minimum, a trilogy, I had set it aside as I didn't want to be kept waiting for the next book(s) to be released. I held on even as the second book became available. Finally, I could wait no longer, and I sort of kick myself. I totally enjoyed this read! Lawrence has a bit of a darkness inside to create a story about a revengeful boy, coming of age in a bloody and murderous rampage. One of those "I wish I could have done that when I was pissed" kind of stories. I read through this book in just a matter of hours, as I had a hard time putting it down. Needless to say, I have started the next book in the series, KING OF THORNS, and expect to have it completed soon. ( )

DNF & Would Not Recommend - And it's not even the rape or violence I had an issue with.

It's how overpowered and unbelievable Jorg is.
A 15-year old who has control of a group of cut-throats and who has *such* grown-up worldviews?
And the flowery language that's supposed to make us think he's so dark and brooding? Cue epic eye rolls.

Jorg reads like a spoilt brat with inflated self-esteem throwing a tantrum. And if you're hoping the other characters could save the book, I hate to tell you, they read flatter than the page the words were printed on. All stereotypes, with little use than to push the story along or to show us just how great Jorg is.

No, I just can't finish this. I'm not wasting my time completing this book just so I can give it a "fair" review. ( )

Prince of Thorns is without a doubt the most original and most memorable fantasy debut of 2011. It's difficult to imagine how another book could top this one

"This is a lean, cold knife-thrust of a novel, a revenge fantasy anchored on the compelling voice and savage purpose of its titular Prince. There is never a safe moment in Lawrence’s debut"

"Dark and relentless, the Prince of Thorns will pull you under and drown you in story. A two in the morning page turner."

The Prince of Thorns is an apt title for young Jorg - as a character he is not heroic at all. He is twisted and violent, calculating and merciless. Yet I couldn't stop reading - regardless how many times Lawrence's brilliant descriptions made me wince and clasp my hand to my mouth in disbelief. It was freaking awesome!

Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence is the best fantasy read I’ve had since Alan Campbell’s Scar Night. It got hold of me from page one and didn’t let go...
