(3) | Ingen/inga | Ain't No Grave: The Life and Legacy of Brother Claude Ely is written as an oral, biographical history taken from the recorded interviews of over 1,000 people in the Appalachian Mountains who personally knew Brother Claude Ely in various phases of his life. Brother Claude Ely, coined as the King Recording Label's "Gospel Ranger" of the Appalachian Mountains, was well-known and loved by many in the earlier part of the twentieth century as both a religious singer/songwriter and a Pentecostal-Holiness preacher. Few people, however, knew the personal details of his childhood, military service, and years of hard work in the coal fields of Southwestern Virginia. Now, decades after his legendary death, many fans still seem mesmerized and touched by this humble man's quick wit and sincere desire to share the Gospel's "Good News" with everyone who would listen to his message of hope and love. - Jacket flap.… (mer) |

These all died in the faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth. For they that say such things declare plainly that they seek a country ... that is heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for He hath prepared for them a city.

Dedikation |
Information från den engelska sidan med allmänna fakta. Redigera om du vill anpassa till ditt språk. Dedicated to Sister Rosey Lingar-Ely
Aunt Rosey, I dedicate this book to you. Spending time with you has been one of the greatest highlights for me in writing this book. After hours of talking with you and hearing your stories, I have come to see a woman who has paid a great price for the cause of ministry. You were the backbone of your husband's ministry. By sacrificially giving so that others could be ministered to, you've modeled the life of holiness in its rarest form. The greatest challenge and inspiration for me personally were that you never complained -- even when I tried to draw it out of you! I love you! and to Brother Claude Ely's children,
Sonnie, Roger, Claude Jr., and Rosey Claudette
Having a man like Brother Claude Ely as a father required you to share him many times with the world. Yet, after all these years, what amazes me most is that you are still so willing to share him. Seeing the imprint he left on each of your lives is truly inspiring. Thank you for trusting me to tell your story. I love you and cherish the title "little cousin." | |

I sincerely pray that after I have taken my last breath on this earth, I too can join the multitude of other saints who have gone before me from these mountains and proclaim just as they did with great confidence, "There Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down." This sympathetic biography of Brother Claude Ely (pronounced like the end of "Robert E. Lee") is written by one of his nephews. Brother Ely grew up in a Pentecostal/Holiness church family in southwestern Virginia. After a stint in the military and some time in the Appalachian coal mines, he felt a calling to be a preacher. During his ministry -- which included full-time jobs at churches in Kentucky, Virginia, and Ohio, as well as many visitations and revivals -- he wrote and sang a number of songs, even recording several albums (a few under the "Gospel Ranger" credit). But his religious passion made it impossible for him to sing any secular songs.
What's most peculiar is that this book includes a CD with about a dozen songs. All of the songs were likely sung by Brother Claude Ely during his ministry, but none of the songs on this CD are actually sung by him (likely due to licensing issues). Instead, we hear a few songs as sung by worshippers of Brother Ely's childhood church, and most of the rest of the songs by the members in his final church. That's really too bad, because there's something very powerful about hearing Brother Ely sing them himself.
There's currently only one CD extant with Brother Claude Ely singing (Satan Get Back from Ace Records). Listening to him sing "Holy, Holy, Holy" or his own healed-from-tuberculosis-inspired "There Ain't No Grave Gonna Hold My Body Down" (later covered by dozens of artists, including Johnny Cash) is reminiscent of any of the early soul or gospel singers. I don't know how many atheists Brother Ely converted, but after listening to him sing any of those songs, you'd have to be awfully hard-hearted not to say, "So that's what the spirit must feel like." After listening to the CD, if you're interested in Brother Claude Ely's life, the book is worth reading, even if it is filled with more reminiscences than facts.
