January 2020 - Read the first paragraph and said “Ughhhh I think the White Princess high I was on is ovah!” Into the library donation box it went.

I very much enjoyed this book. A bit slow to start but once it got going - I couldn't put it down. Not much has been recorded about Jacquetta (mother of Elizabeth Woodville who was Queen consort of England married to Edward IV). I am a HUGE fan of Philippa Gregory and have all of the novels in the series and am reading them in chronological order now. I hope more is written about Jacquetta as I am sure she was truly an interesting woman. ( )

The first book of Philippa Gregory’s book in her Plantagenet and Tudor series features Jacquetta Luxembourg. This particular period of history I first came across while watching the BBC series The White Queen, which has Jacquetta as more of a secondary character. It was interesting to read this and discover her background and the start of a major turning point in history. For me there seems to be a purity around this time period especially shown through the undying lover Jacquetta and Richard have for one another which is portrayed beautifully by Philippa Gregory. Although the story isn’t completely accurate I feel that historical fiction plays such a vital role in sparking a persons interest in a period of history and a well written book such as this is responsible for many history buffs’ introduction and ongoing interest in the subject. Jacquetta of Luxembourg, daughter of a European count, was as a teenager strategically married off to Henry V's brother John. However, upon his death a few short years later she shocked the court and her family by marrying her late husband's chamberlain, Richard Woodville. Though the two longed to withdraw from court life and live quietly with their growing family in the country, time and again duty to the royal household and ultimately the Wars of the Roses continued to force them back.

It'd been some time since I'd read a book by Philippa Gregory, so I decided this was fitting for the 2020 holiday season: a little history, a little fluff and an introduction to a historical figure I'd never heard of previously. It certainly got me wondering more about Jacquetta and her life and influence, as an ancestor to all English monarchs after Henry VII. ( )
