At one moment one woman flew away by the words of one of the elders, soon the whole group was flying one by one. This is an inspiring book that teaches kids about slavery, but also that they can escape any opposition they receive. This book is a retelling of a folktale. It tells the story of how people from Africa could fly with wings before they were taken into slavery. It talked about how they were brought over and forced to work in the cotton fields. They stuck to their beliefs and said a chant. The chant allowed them to be able to fly again and be free. This is definitely a book I wan in my classroom. it is so cute and a great lesson taught. Top 100 Favorite because: There aren't many picture books that have made me tear up, let alone cry. I absolutely did for this one. The incredible illustrations in this updated edition of an earlier collection of American Black folktales convey the narrative's simultaneous messages of oppression and freedom, of sadness and hope. It is a stark look at a history many people like to pretend didn't happen, and still has a hold on American culture in different ways. Neither Virginia Hamilton nor Dr. Diane and Leo Dillon shy away from the reprehensible cruelty that was slavery. Yet one cannot forget it is also a story of magic and freedom. This book tells the tale of how African Americans once could fly with beautiful wings before taken into slavery. When they can no longer take the hardships placed upon them determination arises within and leads to the regaining of flight. Leaving their hardships behind they rise up on wings they had long forgotten. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
