elenchus: Ness's A Monster Calls and Nunes's Dodo share a broadly similar premise, and a serious consideration of the world as seen by hurt children. Dodo is perhaps suitable for younger readers, but both books are not cartoon-y nor simplistic. The aesthetics styles are distinct, too, though the use of dreamscapes and analogues are similar.… (mer)

everything Patrick Ness does is amazing and this is no exception, but it was absolutely devastating, even when you know what's coming. ( )

I just closed the book and am sitting here with hot, fat tears streaming down my face. Beautifully written by Patrick Ness, inspired by an idea from Siobhan Dowd before her death, and beautifully illustrated by Jim Kay, A Monster Calls is the touching story of Conor, a little boy grown old before his time as he cares for his single mother who is dying of cancer.

Conor must face bullies, his eccentric grandmother, his absentee father, and his own thoughts interwoven into a recurring nightmare and the appearance of a story-telling yew-tree-come-to-life as a monster.

What a beautiful story that will leave readers, children and adults alike, crying those cathartic tears that leave us feeling cleansed and healed when they dry. I loved this book even when it felt, momentarily, that it was breaking my heart. Instead, it left me smiling and feeling just a little bit wiser for having read it. ( )

This is a YA novel and 2016 Caudill nominee, with a unique caveat: the author who conceived of this book, Siobhan Dowd (London Eye Mystery) is dead, and Patrick Ness took her ideas and wrote the story. Set in Ireland (which is perfect, given the folklore and "magic" that occurs) the story centers on Connor O'Malley and his mother, who is dying of cancer. Connor is 13 -- a difficult enough age anyway, and his parents are divorced, with his Dad living in America with his new (younger) family, so the deck is definitely stacked against him. As his mother's illness worsens, Connor's grandmother steps in, which also creates problems, since she is not the touchy-feely empathetic type. Connor also has bully issues at school. Is it any wonder Connor begins having nightmarish dreams that involve the yew tree "monster" in his back yard? Despite the middle-of-the-night visits from this powerful, frightening tree, that Connor convinces himself are not real, there is always some evidence (branches, berries, etc.) that remain in the morning. The tree uses the age-old power of stories to help Connor face the darkness is his life and come to terms with his mother's condition. A beautiful exploration of the sub-conscious and the ways (healthy or not) that people deal with loss. ( )

An important book, but I couldn't connect, exactly. I think that was more my fault than Patrick Ness's, though. Read my full review on Mapping Souls With Words. ( )

"... it’s powerful medicine: a story that lodges in your bones and stays there." “A Monster Calls” is a gift from a generous storyteller and a potent piece of art.

The power of this beautiful and achingly sad story for readers over the age of 12 derives not only from Mr. Ness's capacity to write heart-stopping prose but also from Jim Kay's stunning black-ink illustrations. There are images in these pages so wild and ragged that they feel dragged by their roots from the deepest realms of myth.

It's also an extraordinarily beautiful book. Kay's menacing, energetic illustrations and the way they interact with the text, together with the lavish production values, make it a joy just to hold in your hand. If I have one quibble, it is with a line in the introduction where Ness says the point of a story is to "make trouble". It seems to me he has done the opposite here. He's produced something deeply comforting and glowing with – to use a Siobhan Dowd word – solace. The point of art and love is to try to shortchange that grim tax collector, death. Ness, Dowd, Kay and Walker have rifled death's pockets and pulled out a treasure. Death, it seems, is no disqualification.
