En fantastisk upptäckt av Hugo Cabret : en roman i ord och bilder av Brian Selznick (Unoriginality)
Unoriginality: Same author. Filled with many beautiful illustrations like in Wonderstruck. In my opinion it is superior to Wonderstruck.

Just like his debut novel, the Invention of Hugo Cabret , Wonderstruck combines words and illustratios to provide a unique narrative style. The book begins with each of these techniques telling one storyline, but as the novel progresses they begin to overlap as the stories' characters meet and their stories become entwined. At first it wasn't clear why the story kept switching back and forth between 1927 and 1977, but once readers realize that the two protagonists are both deaf they also realize that they might be connected in other ways as well.

I can't wait to see what Selznick writes for his third novel, since he seems to have an uncanny knack for portraying historical events in an interesting light, and bringing ordinary occurances to the forfront of thought. ( )

I was one of the few readers who just couldn't get into "Hugo Cabret." The combination of pictures and text mutually telling the story baffled me and I never found myself fully engaged because I couldn't figure out what the heck was going on story-wise. I ended up putting it aside not even halfway through and never going back to it. I didn't have that problem with "Wonderstruck," though. I really enjoyed it. I loved the format, the illustrations, the two disparate storylines that eventually joined together. The story was very emotional but not cheesey or preachy. Overall the whole book was just lovely. I knocked off a star for the fact that there were just too many coincidences plot-wise, but this is definitely a worthwhile read. ( )

This is the story of Ben and Rose. It is told through words and pictures. When Ben is telling his story it is told in words. When Rose's story is being told it is being told in pictures. Ben's story starts in June 1977. Rose's story starts in October 1927. Both stories are told at the same time. It goes back and forth between the two times lines.

Ben is an 11-year-old boy that is deaf in one ear. He has just lost his mother in a car accident. He lives with his aunt and uncle and shares a room with his cousin. One night Ben sees a light on in his mother's bedroom. Ben's home with his mother is only eighty-three steps away from his aunt and uncle's house. Ben goes to investigate what is going on. While there Ben finds a necklace and a bookmarker with clues to his father and where he might be living in New York City. Ben has never met his father and when he asked his mother about him she became very upset so Ben never asked her about him again. While in his home an accident happens and Ben is left completely deaf. Ben decides to go to New York City to find him. While there he gets lost, makes a friend, and finds more clues to his father.

Rose is a young deaf girl that lives with her father. She keeps a scrapbook about a famous actress named Lillian Mayhew. Rose likes to write little notes and send them across the river in the shape of paper boats. Rose doesn't know how to do sign language or talk. She writes everything down and everyone writes things back to her. Rose's father wants her to learn how to read lips and talk, but Rose doesn't want to. One day Rose sees that the actress Lillian Mayhew is going to be in a play in New York City. Rose runs away from home to meet the actress. When she meets the actress we find out why Rose is so obsessed with her. Rose ends up running away from the theater and ends up at a museum.

Eventually, Rose's and Ben's stories cross paths. It wraps the two stories up together nicely. I really enjoyed this story. The two different ways the stories are told works out nicely. Telling Rose's story through pictures really helps to see her world through not being able to hear anything. Ben could hear at the beginning of the story so his being able to tell his story on his own was a nice way to show his change from hearing to silence. I liked the characters and the story was nicely done.

The main character Rose idolizes an actress and ends up dreaming about her all leading up to her seeing a newspaper, sparking her will to want to go on an adventure with her brother. ( )

The two stories come together at the climax of the book, which manages to incorporate an impressive array of heartfelt issues: everything from education for the deaf to friendship, love of collecting, conservation, memories and dioramas. As I turned the pages my heart was well and truly warmed in that way beloved of a certain type of American children's literature – earnest, life affirming, educational, and impossible to dislike. Reaching the end I leafed back through the 460 pages of Wonderstruck, admiring the pictures, all thoughts of my daughter now banished. Honestly, Brian, I do know how you can be bothered.

He discovered a small blue book, its covers soft and creased with age. On the front, the title was stamped in black letters: WONDERSTRUCK. He flipped through the pages. The book was about the history of museums. On the back it said: Published by the American Museum of Natural History, New York, New York.
Ben remembered reading about curators in Wonderstruck, and thought about what it meant to curate your own life, as his dad had done here. What would it be like to pick and choose the objects and stories that would go into your own cabinet? How would Ben curate his own life? And then, thinking about his museum box, and his house, and his books, and the secret room, he realized he’d already begun doing it. Maybe, thought Ben, we are all cabinets of wonders.
