Well, I made the mistake of reading a bunch of reviews of this book and now I don't really know what I think of it.

Yes, the book does have moments of great beauty and emotion, and I was often engrossed by them-- but they were sometimes swallowed by strange pacing, or lessened by frequent repetition. Yes, Miller smooths together a coherent narrative out of multiple renderings of the story, but some of the wonderful oddities of Greek mythology are neither fully embraced or entirely removed, and seem strange or heavy-handed in this rendition.

On the flip side: Sure, the prose doesn't always bear up under scrutiny, but I think the quick-read, understated lyrical style is a strength of the book, which isn't really designed for being pored over. Sure, Miller's portrayal of Greek social norms surrounding sexuality seem confusingly modern (the "currency of honor"-based taboo against men sleeping together is never really addressed after being mentioned once, and Thetis' and later Neoptolemus' hatred of Patroclus may be nominally about him being a mortal/lower class but read a lot like modern homophobia)-- however, I think for a modern novel with what seems like a mostly young-adult audience that isn't the end of the world.

I guess I think this book deserves neither the great scorn nor outlandish praise heaped upon it. In general, I found it sometimes patchy but fresh and eminently readable. ( )

The writing is very beautiful and atmospherical but I wish I had connected to the characters better. Having studied a bit of the Ilyad before, I really appreciated the accuracy of the narrative.
I'll definitely be checking out Circe. ( )

A beautiful love story set in ancient times. You see this book everywhere, goodreads, Instagram and even twitter. Trying to expand my queer shelf I finally picked this up after it being on my digital and physical tbr for years.

This story is about Patroclus, something I didn’t know as I thought it would be about Achilles. We follow Patroclus through his life. We start with a young boy who’s exiled by his father, a king in ancient Greece. Patroclus flees and finds the court of king Peleus and his son Achilles. He and Achilles soon become friends against their differences. Their friendship turns into something more as the years progress and the boys turn into young man. The real question is if their bond can stand against all that is thrown at them.

I enjoyed this one. I listened to the story via an audiobook. To be honest I feel like that was the only way for me to get through this one. Not that it’s a bad story but the way it’s written has a type of fairytale aspect to it that suited really well for an audiobook. It also helped the narrator had such a soothing voice. As for the story it’s a solid 4 stars for me. The way this was written was the thing that really made it for me. You could just see that the author had done years of research before starting this story. The characters were just fine. The one that really stood out was Patroclus for me. His character arc was really interesting, him growing up as an exile to the partner of a mighty hero. The romance was only so so I have to say. I feel like it was just there. There wasn’t a real connection between the two and in my opinion, Patroclus loved Achilles but not the other way around. Which maybe makes the story sadder and heartbreaking. The way she took me into an ancient time and really believing these people had lived was just phenomenal. It’s more like you’re reading a non-fiction than a historical fiction.

A good book for lovers of ancient Greek stories and myths. though the romance wasn’t what I had hoped it would be I’m glad this story of two boys falling in love got told.

That The Song of Achilles offers a different take on the epic story of Achilles and the Trojan War is not, in itself, anything particularly out of the ordinary. People have been putting their own spins on The Iliad from the instant Homer finished reciting it. What's startling about this sharply written, cleverly re-imagined, enormously promising debut novel from Madeline Miller is how fresh and moving her take on the tale is — how she has managed to bring Achilles and his companion Patroclus to life in our time without removing them from their own.

But in the case of Miller, who earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in classics at Brown, the epic reach exceeds her technical grasp. The result is a book that has the head of a young adult novel, the body of the “Iliad” and the hindquarters of Barbara Cartland.
