I understand why this series has become such a beloved classic, apart from the weird stuff and the childishness. It's still a great series for practically any age.
One huge plus for me is that it's not as cluttered as a lot of newer shoujo is. There are backgrounds and things to look at other than characters, but it's not tons of sparkles and ribbons and stuff in the backgrounds that detract from the focal point of each image. It's still "girly" and sometimes there are flowers and stuff, but nothing extreme (looking at you Tanemura Arina--gorgeous art, but sometimes exhausting). (
