Augustine struggles against his terrible lust which does not elaborate on except to say how terrible it was but tries to find the answers in his own way. He turned to God -- "Give me chastity and continence, but not just yet." He bounced around and asked a lot of questions of different sects. Fell into Neoplatonism and found some answers. Combined it with Christianity and found something he could believe in. He made some brilliant arguments about time and evil. Later he also made some stupid and offensive arguments. During the sack of Rome by the Visigoths (He called them Goths) women were raped by the invaders. Agustine did say that the women were still virtuous because they did not sin in the mind, but they were at fault if they enjoyed it. Perhaps, too God had the women raped who were too proud of their virtue.

I did not get must Agustine in Political Science even while attending religious universities. It is easy to see his effect on Christianity. The combining of Greek philosophy and Christianity gave Christianity traction in Europe and tied it to European philosophy. This allowed it to be something more than just a Middle Eastern religion.
