An unexpectedly engaging and even-handed account of one criminal prosecution of a man accused of cutting his two-year old daughter's clitoris with scissors as an act of female genital cutting. The author argues a compelling case that the defendant was convicted not because of guilt, but because the trial became a showplace for responses built out of negative attitudes toward immigrants from Africa "invading" a white southern suburb, characterizations of Africans as barbarians thoughtlessly reenacting ancient and cruel rituals, and imperial feminists determined to impose their understandings of gender relations upon the world entire. Khalid never stood a chance. ( ) inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
In 2006, a suburban Atlanta jury convicted Khalid Misri Adem, a 31-year-old Ethiopian immigrant, of two counts of aggravated assault and cruelty to children for allegedly circumcising his daughter when she was two years old. However, the trial against Khalid Adem was far from uncontroversial. Mutilating Khalid explores the symbolic politics that surrounded the Adem case, showing how prosecutors, judges, reporters, politicians and activists set out to mould the public's image of Khalid Adem and to appropriate his symbolic values for their own particular purposes.
