Book one in the USA Today best-selling McMaster the Disaster series. Josephine McMaster is pretty and smart, but very much a klutzy mess. Finally, at 26, she may have actually lost the dreaded 'McMaster the Disaster' nickname that has followed her around her whole life. Josie's quite content to be single, much to her mother's disappointment. So when a bizarre contest is announced where a socialite is holding a lottery to pick her bridesmaids (and rake in a little extra cash), she can't roll her eyes fast enough, even if it does mean meeting Jake Hall, her one and only movie star crush. Obviously, Josie doesn't enter the bridesmaid lottery, so you can imagine her surprise when her picture pops up among the winners, thanks to Mom. With a little prodding - okay bribing - Josie agrees to participate. The wedding turns into the event of the year, and Josie finds herself in the middle of a paparazzi feeding frenzy, which gets even crazier after Jake Hall takes a special interest in her. Can Josie handle the pressure in the spotlight? Is it possible she might really have a chance with Jake Hall? And if she's busy worrying about all that, how in the heck is she going to keep 'McMaster the Disaster' from showing up in front of the entire world?… (mer)

So this was actually pretty good, with only a few moments where things bordered on the 'not remotely possible' or 'author should have researched this better' -- I laughed, and the story totally achieved the intended purpose of making me forget about real life for a while, so all in all, it was a good read. Fun, quirky, and quick. I actually thought that after some heavy reading of other books I needed this. I liked it and have sent downloaded two and three. ( )

A fun, goofy, light-hearted chick lit book. If you want fluff to read by the pool or on the beach then pick this one up. It made me smile. ( )

Fun. 3½ Stars. With two already published sequels to look forward to. One previous reviewer called the romance tame; well, admittedly PG-13 side of things with no explicit sex scenes. But fast paced, good characters, funny moments and I was wanting a lighthearted read (particularly over some of the very violent and/or explicit urban fantasies flooding all the bookshelves lately). Goodreads book descriptions accurate so I'm not going to summarize the plot or characters. Premise worked a little better for me with half of lotto money going to charity than if had been just a greedy bride.

[edit November 2012] Upon re-reading for a goodreads group book-of-the-month discussion, some editing and continuity problems stuck out a bit more but still stand by my initial rating and it was a shortish, romp of a read (editing problems really nothing compared to other self-published books I waded thru and did not make me pause in story to figure out as author's voice was clear; for example, "Hal1" instead of "Hall," - minor and story still flowed for me.) Reviews for this book are surprisingly varied; it's intended to be a light, funny story which worked for me...hardly deep, profound great American novel...guess that's why I'm surprised to see reviews with extreme feelings of love/hate for the book.

I enjoyed enough to purchase and read rest of series—a truer review than the words I just wrote or any ratings. ( )
