In this story, a little girl is on the search for a friend but her yelling scares all of the animals away. Ultimately, she is able to befriend a lion whose roar is able to match hers. ( )

I liked this book for 3 reasons. First, I really like the repetition of both words and ideas in this book. The book starts out by saying, “There once was a little, little girl…with a big, big voice.” This puts emphasis on her size and the effect of her voice. Throughout the story, the little girl continuously meets different animals and scares them away with her big voice. Due to this, kids can predict what is going to happen next in the book. Second, I like the illustrations in this book. The illustrator uses unusual and sometimes unrealistic color combinations that really catch the reader’s eye. I do, however, feel as if the illustrations would be more appealing to girls than boys due to the illustrator’s use of pinks, reds, and oranges. Third, I particularly like the message that this book gives to readers. Parents or teachers may have to help children to come to the correct conclusion from the events in the story, but the central message is a powerful one. I believe that this book teaches children that not everyone is going to want to be their friend. It teaches children not to change for those who do not like something about them, and to find friends that like you for who you are or are similar to you. For example, when the young girl finds the lion that can handle and reciprocate her big voice, they are happy and able to laugh and play together. ( )

The bright, bold colors are just irresistible. This tiny girl has a big voice, so big that she scares away all the animals she tries to befriend. That is until she meets a lion with a roar as big as her voice. I like that the story is about a child who finds happiness by being her unique self. She doesn’t, not even for a second, think about changing to get others to like her.
