I was not overly surprised at the ending but it still held my attention and kept me reading. Overall a well written book. ( ) I liked this better than #2 in the series ([b:Betraying Season|5505328|Betraying Season (Leland Sisters, #2)|Marissa Doyle|http://d.gr-assets.com/books/1312036881s/5505328.jpg|5594593]). It's only tenuously connected to the first two, which is fine because it felt like a fresh start. The identity of the villain was overly telegraphed for my tastes (I usually can't figure these things out and don't try, so if it's obvious to me then I end up being irked by the obliviousness of the characters), but that was the only flaw I found in this charming story. (Some might find the character-building pointed morals heavy-handed, but I can always use a bit of character-building encouragement with my stories.) Sophie is a young witch, forced to figure out why her magic stopped when her mother and sister died. She is left with a shriveled foot and walks with a cane. In 1815, with such an infirmity, it is assumed she can have no place in London society except for someone who will always sit on the sidelines, and can only expect to have second best choice when it comes to eligible men. In 1815, Lady Sophie Rosier's first London season is marred not only by her physical and emotional scars, but also by magical attacks on her father and other members of the British War Cabinet, and while Sophie's magical powers are unreliable, she and her new best friend Parthenope decide to investigate--despite the distraction of Parthenope's handsome cousin.
