A short and sweet fairytale about where dreams and nightmares come from and the discovery of self. Very short (took me less than an hour to read) but wonderful imagery and salient characterization of varying types.

TW: child abuse, domestic abuse, nightmares

For fans of A Monster Calls, Gossamer tells the tale of a dream-giver and the young boy she bestows dreams upon. He is a troubled child with an unsettling past, and he needs all the good dreams he can get, especially with the Sinisteed Horde that is fast approaching him, intent on giving him horrible nightmares.

"Sad parts are important ... you must include the sad parts, because they are part of the story, and they have to be part of the dreams."
The book is short and bittersweet, with darker themes than most of Lowry's work. I wish that there was more in this world, as it is very interesting and unique. I love sandman-esque stories. The worldbuilding was well done and the characters were all excellent. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

"Change means leaving things behind, and that's always sad." ( )

I love Lois Lowry. A beautiful, whimsical story of the creatures that bestow dreams a troubled boy, his foster grandmother and the mother that is trying to get him back. Sweet, but still real. ( )

This is the kind of book that pulls at your emotions. Lois Lowry is a master at evoking feelings in her readers. Gossamer is fantasy and realistic fiction rolled into one story.

On the fantasy side you have entities which are tasked with giving people dreams. They slide under your door at night and go around touching personal objects to get the stories from them. Then breathe it all into your ear, giving you a happy, jumbled up dream. But there are also malevolent entities who prey on people with problems, giving them nightmares.

On the realistic side you have a boy named John who has been placed in foster care with a sweet older woman who is very patient and understanding with him. His father was abusive and his mother was neglectful. This boy is an emotional mess. He angers easily and wants to shoot people who are mean to him. He tells whoppers about his parents, making them seem like wonderful people. But he's gaining trust and learning to love her dog, Toby. Meanwhile his mom is getting her act together to.

The two entities, Thin Elderly and Littlest One, have the task of overriding John's nightmares with powerful, happy dreams. It's a quick, but lovely story of hope. ( )
