A man who has spent his life defending his country discovers that fate has presented him with an even higher calling. Ben Morvant is not what you would call ordinary and as a Navy SEAL, he never expected an ordinary life. But when a routine mission to protect a local village in a war-torn region of Africa goes terribly wrong, Ben is presented with truths beyond what his military training and experience have prepared him to accept. With his dying breath, a village elder passes to Ben a gift-a simple ring, unremarkable except for its ever changing color and the feeling of power emanating from within. Soon after accepting the ring dark visions begin to haunt Ben's dreams. Images of pain and death, of evil and destruction. But some of the visions are hauntingly familiar. Soon Ben must return to his childhood home in Louisiana to face a dark secret from his past, one that may explain why he has the power to heal with a touch of the hand . . . or kill with a single thought. After discovering the truth about his family and himself, he comes to realize that he is a soldier in a greater battle than he could ever have imagined. And if he cannot find a way to wield the power concealed within him, the forces that prey on mankind's anger and fear will destroy not only him, but everything he holds dear.… (mer)

Unfortunately, I just couldn't figure this one out. It seemed like the author wanted to write several books from different genres all at the same time, and so they became jumbled together into this. The parts I enjoyed were few and far between, and I gave up about a third of the way through. ( )

It is a love story, it is a military story, it is a supernatural story and it takes a great writer to make this combination work. I don't think Jeffrey Wilson did a bad job, but for sure the many perspectives (romance, war and horror/supernatural) dilute somewhat the strength of the whole.

As far as I can see the military elements are written very well and there lies the great strenght of this book. The supernatural elements are a bit weaker and the reader is most of the time far ahead of he main character in understanding what is happening. Many times you want to jump up and shout and point out to Ben what he has to do, but of course you cannot and that leaves you somewhat frustrated. The romance elements are well written too, but out of necessity are on a totally different pace as the military and supernatural elements and there is some feeling of a certain lack of coordination between all these elements.

Still, I very much enjoyed reading this book and if a sequel is written I am quite certain I'd buy it, if only to see how Ben manages to integrate these different elements of his life. ( )

I am sorry to say that this book just couldn't hold my interest. The narrative moves between very articulate and, sometimes, almost juvenile. There are times when I had to reread a sentance three times before determining the meaning.

The actions sequences that I managed to read (I made it approximately 60% through the book) were well paced and held interest. The portions related to the main character's homeland and upbringing...not so much.

The story sounds intriguing, but I just couldn't manage to get to the end. Too many stumbles along the way. ( )

at first i quite liked this book. a little further on i started to wonder. it totally takes a swing in to voodoo, visions and lost races. not my thing. i liked that it was done with a military accent and that helped to make it creepy. i just don't get into the voodoo stuff. not to mention this book was apparently sent to me like 6 mo ago and i just go it. Early Review Book

I enjoyed this story. I enjoyed the military aspect and the romance aspect, and the paranormal aspect.
There were a couple of spots that could have been fleshed out better, and Ben's (the lead) identity crisis was a little bit unbelievable. If you've been around the super natural all your life, you know it when you see it. He has a bad case of "I think he doth protest to much." Other than that he was a likeable character.

The terrorist aspect was a sign of the times we live in. With Al Queda being the bad guys, but I could live with that.

Don't know to whom I would recommend it, as none of my friends would be interested in this mixed up genre of a book. But if you would like to try something different, I believe this books qualifies. ( )
