A nice addition to the Fairyland series. It was great to learn about Mallow "before." She has much of the pluck that September (from the rest of the series) has, and that pluck, plus the wonderful crazy Fairyland world is part of why I enjoy the series so much. ( )

This story was more pleasing to me than the book it technically precedes was. That having been said, Sasha hits the nail on the head when she says this story isn't for children. The themes are continuing to get darker and more adult, which altogether is much more pleasurable than the feigned kid-friendliness that permeated in small degrees the first book.

This story was good. A quick read. A rather sad read after you know what's going to happen.

I read this novella (with my daughter) after all five of Valente's fairyland novels. I think it would have been good to read it after the first, which seems to have been the publication sequence. It doesn't really spoiler anything in the other four books, it precedes all four in narrative chronology, and it sets up some of the important events of the fourth and fifth. Reading it this way worked all right, though. It made it possible to guess where things were going in the plot, although there was still a surprise or two. The imaginative intensity is certainly of a piece with the other stories.

2016-04-06: I don't always enjoy what Catherynne Valente writes but her writing is always fantastic. She has a such a great use of the language. I don't have words to say what I want but he would and it would be flowery and pretty and make fireworks go off in your brain.

This was an entertaining novelette that was quite pleasant. ( )

As in Book 1 of this series, I was immediately enchanted by Valente's writing. She has a way with words that is almost magical. Though this one is just a short story, I am thrilled that she decided to tell Mallow's story. It could easily have been expanded into a full-length tale, but for once I'm actually satisfied with a short story. If you enjoyed "The Girl Who Circumnavigated Fairyland in a Ship of Her own Making," then you will be equally delighted by this story. I can't wait to read more of what Ms. Valente has to offer.

In which a young girl named Mallow leaves the country for the city, meets a number of Winds, Cats, and handsome folk, sees something dreadful, and engages, much against her will, in Politicks of the most muddled kind.
