Easily the best in the series yet. More characterization for secondary characters and Granuaile, little bit more background on Atticus, good action, less painful pop culture references. There were a few interesting twists and genuinely creepy moments. Its fun getting more of the elemental background of the druids.

Sex Chat: There's still a bit of rape chat in this books, towards the beginning, when Atticus convinces the Morrigan to have a rape orgy at a murder site. Interestingly this time around, Atticus appears more guilty convincing the Morrigan to rape other men instead of him, than he did convincing the frost giants to rape Freyja for fun. Thankfully the mass rape doesn't occur, but I'm getting kinda sick of it at this point. ( )

A Non-stop Fight For Survival That Had Me Hooked!

I've become quite a fan of this urban fantasy series and have enjoyed each book to date. I love Kevin Hearne's writing style, finding it: intelligent and well researched but easy to read. His stories are full of threads but never leave me feeling confused, keeping me hooked from beginning to end - Tricked was no exception.

Once again, I downloaded the narration to listen to the story while reading; Christopher Ragland's performance was amazing and transported me feet-first into this adventure. The pace at which he read the story and the emotion he added to the different scenes was perfect. Although his female voices aren't quite as believable as his male ones, ;-) I still loved the accents he crafted for each character - his performance bringing each one to life in my mind.

While I'm talking about the characters, I must say how much I'm loving them all in this series. Every one feels like a complex being in their own right, with their own tales and histories, making them all feel so real and believable. I'm looking forward to getting to know some of the supporting cast in subsequent books. I became invested in the survival of the Navajo construction crew - I cried, laughed and raged with them. But I must say, Oberon, Atticus’ faithful Irish Wolfhound is still the BEST part of the team, he just lights up my heart in every scene he's in with his comments and antics.

I think that the story unfolded at a good pace, never giving us any more information than Atticus had, which meant that we journeyed with him, never really knowing when or where the next attack would strike. I loved the action-packed pace of this book, spending most of my time on the edge of my seat, holding my breath.

Although this is the fourth book in the Iron Druid Chronicles, Kevin Hearne does a great job of weaving in any pertinent information for new readers (or us rather forgetful older readers) into this story without any detrimental effects. There is no perilous life-or-death cliffhanger at the end of this book (woop!woop!) which means that it could be read as a standalone, however, I for one have become emotionally invested and I can’t wait to see what trials and adventures Atticus, Oberon and Granuaile have to face next! Good story, well written and well narrated. ( )

My first reaction was that the narration is growing up, and it is, but my second reaction is how much more enjoyable the read is. Sure, the cultural references are simply a nod to the readers showing us what the author's interests are, and I love all such head bobbing because it allows me to see where the author is coming from. I've always tried to understand what an author is trying to accomplish, whether or not they actually succeed; in this way, I can properly and justly judge the writer separately from my own preconceptions. (This is unlikely, anyway, but I still give it the old college-try.)
We've got a narrator who is a bad-ass who has steeped himself in enough recent (30 year-ish) cultural morass that I'm surprised he didn't become the first 2100 year-old couch potato. Although, I suppose that could be an interesting story in itself. It could be that he's just a fan-boy. The narrator, not just the author; we know that already. My only complaint is that if he is so susceptible to cultural fan-boy-ism, then why doesn't he have a lot more thrown in besides Shakespeare and the more recent stuff? Why not have him get into the Hellfire club and join anarchist book clubs run by fire toting Deists. Oh wait, I'm talking about having the druid be one of America's Founding Fathers. Oh, well, maybe later. :)

It's ok, because I know he's aimed at being relevant to today's readers, and I can forgive a lot as long as it remains entertaining. It does so, very much so. This book is probably my favorite of the
series, so far.
