As I've written in previous reviews, I'm enchanted with the urban fantasy world of Kate Daniels. This story is not a part of the main series, but is a side novel that centers around Kate's best friend, Andrea Nash. The plot is situated between novels five and six in the main series, meaning that Andrea is in the middle of some tough times. She and Raphael broke up over her commitment to the Order, then was expelled from the Order after they found out she was a beastkin, and then she disappeared for a few months as she tried, unsuccessfully, to convince the Order that humans with magical powers could be a valued part of their team. When this story opens, she is back in Atlanta and trying to pick up the pieces of her life. Andrea has reconnected with Kate, who gave her hell for going completely MIA, but forgave her and hired her as part of Kate's new detective agency. As such, Jim gives Andrea a case about some murders in the Pack, which forces her to speak to Raphael again, and spend more time with him than may be healthy for her heart. And Andrea has to confront whether she is able to accept Aunt B's adamant invitations to join Clan Bouda. Of course, the case leads Andrea into battles of epic magic proportions, involving evil snake people, Egyptian mythological creatures, and narcissistic gods that want to destroy everything.

It's a fun story, and hits a lot of the checkpoints I've grown accustomed to in Kate Daniels novels: exciting action, interesting new side characters, a kick-butt heroine, the perfect pacing of action to dialogue, sarcastic humor, and swoony romance. I was happy that we got to spend some extended time with Andrea, to see how she resolved big issues in her life, and especially how she worked things out with Raphael. I knew they would, but it was satisfying to read. Overall, this was an easy, fast read, and developed more of the Kate Daniels world. The only thing it was missing was more Kate. I realized, after finishing this, that as much as I like Andrea, I like Kate more. Fortunately, this ebook also includes a novella at the end called "Magic Gifts" that starts with a date between Kate and Curran, and turns into an adventure with vampires, necromancers, and a magical necklace that is trying to choke the life of a little boy.

Definitely read this book if you are loving the Kate Daniels series, or if you just appreciate quality urban fantasy with well-drawn female characters. Andrea is a great character and deserves the spotlight she gets here. Plus, the book develops some plot points that pertain to the larger plot of the main series. The short story at the end is a must-read, as well. Even now that Kate and Curran are together, their banter and interactions are still sexy and sweet, and Kate fight scenes are the best. This was not quite as exciting for me as the main Kate Daniels books, but it was close. ( )

I didn't mean to just do my re-read in the middle like this, but I was stuck somewhere with barely any Wi-Fi and this book was already downloaded to my Kindle so I decided to re-read "Gunmetal Magic."

"Gunmetal Magic" follows Kate Daniels best friend Andrea Nash. This book follows the events of "Magic Slays." Andrea used to be a Knight of Merciful Aid. When it came out that she was a shapeshifter she was kicked out and left without a purpose. She also lost her boyfriend, Raphael Medrano when she chose the Knights over the shapeshifters. Andrea is now working with Kate at her investigative firm, Cutting Edge. Andrea still feels a bit adrift, but having a purpose is helping her feel more grounded. When some shapeshifters working at a dig site die, Andrea is called in to investigate. Too bad the dig site belongs to her ex-boyfriend. Ilona Andrews manages to make the overall mystery of who is killing the shapeshifters and why really well done. This book totally stands on it own.

Andrea has a lot of ambivalence about the Pack that the Beast Lord leads (Curran) and Raphael being the mother of the Alpha of Clan Bouda. Readers already know that Andrea was abused severely as a child since she was a "beast skin." Andrews gets into that a little bit more and you get to see a different side of a clan in this one which gave me the shivers. I can see why Andrea balked about joining any clan and why she was so focused on staying a Knight.

Andrea still has feelings for Raphael, but it looks like that bridge may be burned. We get a lot of scenes between the two and they finally have things out, it was really good and I always liked Raphael, but this book made me adore him a bit more.

We get some familiar character sightings, Kate, Curran, Derek, Julie, Aunt B, Jim, etc. What I thought was great though is that since the action is not focused on Kate and Curran, we are able to get more into the clan mindset in this one with their structure and purpose. We also get more commentary about what shapeshifter animals mean more too.

The writing and the flow was fantastic. The story felt a bit short though to me, I think though that is because we get a standalone Kate and Curran story. We get to follow these two who were up to their own adventure during the events of "Gunmetal Magic." And these two together always sing to me.

The world building was really good. We get another big bad in this one and we get to read about Egyptian mythology as well as some Norse and I think Native American as well.

The ending with Andrea was perfect and the Kate and Curran one finished with a nice punch as well. ( )

"Gunmetal Magic" takes place after "Magic Slays" but is focused on Andrea and Raphael rather that Kate and Curran (if you don't know what I'm talking about, skip this review and go and read "Magic Bites" and the four novels that follow it, then come back here).

The good news is that it's a full novel and not just a backstory originally penned for world-building and marketed to keep the author's name in front of the public during the long wait for the next book in the series.

The Bouda / Werehyena mindset is centre stage in this book. The relationship between Andrea and Raphael is refreshingly wild, so much less restrained and less angst-ridden than the whole Kate and Curran thing. I loved their instinctive territoriality, their uncontrollable jealousy, their spontaneous aggression, the joy they take in running in the forest and their matter-of-fact approach to killing those who threaten them.

The actions scenes are as good as ever. I loved the opening scene where Andrea wakes to find that one of her neighbours has been trapped by large killer bugs that rode the last magic wave into the world. What's not to love about a dainty-looking 5'2" woman, dressed in pyjamas, touting a pair of Sig Sauers and an assault shotgun, shooting bugs that explode into an icky mess?

The abuse Andrea suffered in her childhood is described in rage-provoking detail that sets the context for Andrea deciding what to do when she meets one of her tormentors. It also explains some of her reluctance to submit to Aunt Bee and join the Bouda pack.. Andrea's solutions to both issues go a long way to explaining who she is and who she might become.

I was impressed with the fact that Andre is not Kate with a gun instead of a sword. She sees the world differently. She has a strong need to belong and to serve and a deep trauma-based resistance to submission. In this book, where she is finally free from secrets and able to be herself, she has a joy in her own power and a passion for life that Kate never demonstrates.

The plot in the book is a little lackluster. The big bad in this talks way too much, he could inflict death by monologue, and the tasks he sets seemed a little pointless. Still, it provided an excellent vehicle for Andrea to find her way forward after being kicked out of the order so it was well worth the read. ( )

I love Andrea and I'm really glad that I finally got to read her story. She was always a fascinating secondary character in the Kate Daniels' series. This didn't disappoint. I wasn't sure how her love life would work out. I'm glad that it was as intense and funny as I'd hoped. She is well-matched. If you haven't read this series, then you are truly missing out on a stellar Urban Fantasy series (with touches of romance). In fact, I think it's going to go down as my all-time favorite series ever. And if you're a writer, then you should read it because it's like a master class in character, storytelling, and world-building. ( )
