On New Year's Day of 1915 a bloody terrorist attack took place in the Australian town of Broken Hill. The newspapers of the time reported that two Turks attacked a picnic train and murdered innocent civilians. This tragic event helped the recruitment campaign of the Australian government, which had been having difficulties in drawing sufficient number of volunteers for the Great War. Soon after the Broken Hill attack, thousands of Australians and New Zealanders volunteered to join the ANZAC forces and many of those volunteers had a burning desire to punish the Turks.
