Review:

Alienation is not a new theme in literature, much less so in YA fiction. The story of August Pullman, however, is as refreshing as it is familiar. Auggie (as his friends and family call him) was born with a startling cocktail of disorders that left his face so deformed it makes small children cry. As August himself puts it, "whatever you're thinking, it's probably worse" (p.3). His uniqueness is purely physical, but it brings with it a whole host of social consequences, especially when August starts middle school. Having been homeschooled his whole life, Auggie's mom, dad, and sister, Via, were able to protect him. Now, the reality of the world, of school life in upper Manhattan is a reality for Auggie too. Bullies and friends, betrayals and ambiguities, Auggie navigates them all with a genuineness that endears him to the reader. Wonder is a novel about middle school which, in its spare prose, avoids feeling juvenile. The narration passes between the main character and five others who orbit him to greater or lesser degrees. Interestingly, all the narrators are children; no adults give a perspective on August. Despite this variety of perspectives, the story remains tightly told, never straying too far from Auggie's evolution. The ending to somewhat too pat, but is also as uplifting as the book deserves. Although Palacio doesn't run from the realities of bullying, she never lets her characters descend so far into the darkness that they can't return safely (though not unchanged). In the end, the book is a hopeful message to the bullied and those who love them. Highly recommended.

{My thoughts} – First of all I have to admit to watching the movie before reading the book. It was one of those I’m really curious how they managed a movie given the context of the book. I have to admit both the book and the movie is brilliant.

This book is about a little boy named August that was born with a facial deformity. Despite it he is a regular boy that enjoys doing things that regular boys his age enjoy doing. He’s a sweet boy with a positive attitude given his circumstances.

August is about to go through one of the biggest changes in his life. He’s about to start middle school at a real school. Up until this point in his life his mom has always home schooled him. He’s never been inside a real school aside from when his family went to school functions for his sister.

He’s scared that no one will like him and that he’ll be made fun of by the other children in his class as well as the entire school. He has a very logical fear.

It turns out not to be as bad as he’d thought at first. However, he does go through some rough spots throughout a majority of the book. The end result is for the reader to decide.

I really enjoyed this book. It shows that even though you may be different that you can still do and accomplish all the same things that other kids your age are doing and more if you really really put your mind to it. ( )

This is a great book that tells the story of August Pullman, a kid with a genetic deformity. This is an emotional and thought provoking chapter book, and one would think that with such a deep book it would be harder to understand, however this is not the case as the author uses excellent use of simple words to convey complex messages. The author was actually inspired by their own kid’s reaction to seeing someone with a deformity, which I think adds a new layer of depth to the work. ( )

"Kinder than is necessary," he [Mr. Tushman] repeated. What a marvelous line, isn't it? Kinder than is necesary. Because it's not enough to be kind. One should be kinder than needed. Why I love that line, that concept, is that it reminds me that we carry with us, as human beings, not just the capacity to be kind, but the very choice of knindness. -Palacio, p. 300
