2nd EDITIONHero (or Heron) of Alexandria (c. 10-70 AD) was an ancient Greek mathematician and engineer who lived in the Roman province of Egypt; He is considered the greatest experimenter of antiquity and his work is representative of the Greek scientific tradition.Hero published a famous description of a simple steam engine called an aeolipile. Among his most famous inventions were a windwheel, a cuckoo clock and a vending machine. Much of Hero's original writings and designs have been lost, having been burned by anti-pagan Christians sometime in the late 4th to 5th century but what remains of his work gives a fascinating insight into how advanced ancient Greco-Roman civilization was technically. I could not get a copy of this book for under $500. So I borrowed a copy with interlibrary loan, and scanned each page. Then I printed out 10 copies and had them professionally bound. I have 2 copies spare, $130 + shipping to you.
What fun a dinner at Hero's must have been. If you were served from one of his trick jugs, you might see red wine poured on, but get white wine out. Or water. Hero even relates that the slave serving the wine should be in on the trick. I suspect that if you wanted to get drunk, you would go home sober, and if you wanted to stay sober, you would go home roaring with a slave at each corner.
Some of hero's devices are so stupid that they could never possibly have worked, such as the wind powered water-organ.
