Första delen i Grisha-trilogin! I enjoyed this book for a quick easy read. It isn't the best YA I've read but I did like reading it. I thought the world was very interesting though I'm not sure I fully understand all of it yet. I'm also not wholly taken with the main characters at the moment but I definitely hate the main villain which does make the story a bit more compelling. I own the next two books so I'm sure I'll pick them up soon because I am curious about where the story is going but while I did enjoy this book it felt very much like set up for the next book. I wasn't entirely always interested in the plot of this book for that reason. There was a lot of exposition and while it was interesting to read about this world I felt like I was waiting for the climax thorough the whole book. Overall I'm looking forward to seeing where the story goes and I hope I like the characters a bit more in the next book. ( )

An interesting take on an historical magic system in alternate Russia (a weakness of mine), and while it seems to foray into cliched love triangle territory, it thankfully veers away near the end. There's the standard "'plain' chosen girl who's in love with her gorgeous best friend and who cannot imagine that's she's desirable and special!" plot, but that's pretty standard for middle-grade novels nowadays, no matter the genre, and I've become pretty immunized lately.

While the trilogy as a series is enjoyable for both boys and girls, the first one might seem a little "girly" to male readers, especially with Alina's doubts about Mal's affection and the Darkling's advances. But as the action and the ethical dilemmas rise, that falls a little to the wayside and the plot is better for it. ( )

This was an amazing start to a series. It's a war-torn world with refugees and orphans, dark and light magic. We follow Alina who was orphaned and sent to live with a Duke who took in orphans, fed, clothed and educated them and prepared them to take their place in the world by learning a trade or joining the first army. The first army is full of re"regular" soldiers, while the second army is full of magic (or science) users called Grisha. Alina grew up with her best friend Mal and they did everything together, even became soliders for the first army. During a trip into The Fold, a place in the world covered in darkness and haunted by vicous creatures--a place created by a Grisha gone bad centuries ago--they are attacked. When Mal is nearly killed, Alina's grisha power makes itself known.

After that she is and Mal are torn apart, and she is taking to the King's palace to train to use her power as the ONLY Sun Summoner. With her power, it is possible to destroy the fold and unite the country of Ravka (which is separated by the Fold).

So many twists and turns. There are times when I want to shake characters and hug them. I enjoyed the characters and was taken in by some. The story kept me insterested and engaged. I'm only sorry it too me so long to read. ( )

A YA fantasy series that start out strong. I’ve had this series on my shelves for more than over a year. I read the Six of Crows duology maybe 2 years ago. After liking it so much I had to read the trilogy that came before it. I already read a couple of reviews and I knew a shouldn’t get my hopes up. Luckily the hopes that I still had were met and this turned out to be a fun time.

The story is about Alina. An orphan living in the kingdom of Ravka, a Land inspired by the Russian dynasty in 1700. Ravka is a land where some people are Grisha; people with extraordinary abilities. She is put in an orphanage with Mal another orphan at a young age. They grow up together and become best friends. Later in life Alina is working for the First army as a mapmaker. After trying to cross a dangerous area in the land call the Fold she meets the Darkling. A Grisha with the unique power to amplify others. Alina finds out she also has a unique power; the Darkling takes her to the king’s castle to train her. She has to survive the brutal training they have prepared for her and figure out what the Darkling is planning that involves the whole kingdom of Ravka.

I quite liked this one. It was nothing groundbreaking or mind-blowing but I actually enjoyed myself. After reading the Six of Crows duology I was curious what the world would look like on the main land of Ravka. The characters were just fine for me. I liked that we get to follow Alina as she makes the discovery that she has powers to all the hidden pain and suffering that was trapped inside of her. The closest side characters were also fine. Mal and the Darkling were two very different voices and even though we don’t get to see a whole lot of the Darkling I liked him. All of the other characters like the Grisha ones or the whole palace staff were very one dimensional. They were not as fleshed out as I would have liked them to be. Like the only friend that Alina makes at the palace, Genya? I can’t even remember her name. She had way too little to do except hanging around Alina whenever she needed someone. The world building I’m indecisive about. The idea of a “fantasy” world based on Russia sounds interesting. Bardugo does get the job done for like maybe 75%. I had the same problem with this as I had with the duology. There are some bits and pieces that I just don’t get. It feels like getting thrown into a story and having to learn all the tips and tricks without any explanation. The writing style was good, keeping in mind that this was her first novel. It’s an interesting story and very easy to read. What it has going for it is that it feels and reads like nothing else. Even though the tropes are the same for every YA series it didn’t bother me as much because the setting feels very fresh and new.

A fun and easy time reading about a girl who is the chosen one to save the kingdom ( )

The servants called them malenchki, little ghosts, because they were the smallest and the youngest, and because they haunted the Duke’s house like giggling phantoms, darting in and out of rooms, hiding in cupboards to eavesdrop, sneaking into the kitchen to steal the last of the summer peaches.
