    Unwind av Neal Shusterman (aeleone)
aeleone: Similar set up with children abandoned by their parents sent to a camp. The Unwind series does not have supernatural powers, but it does have a very messed up world in which children are not valued.

I liked this book. I had heard a lot about this book being amazing but I didn't know exactly what to expect, but I ended up really liking it. I had to do some work the week before going back to school and now I am back at school, so it took me longer to finish this book than I would have liked. I really liked all the characters and I found that I was learning to like the characters alongside the main character, Ruby. This lead to all the characters feeling more real. I really want to see what happens to everyone in the next two books. The world also seemed very real. It was easy to tell that the world had been a bit of a dystopia for a while and that systems were set up. [a:Alexandra Bracken|2973783|Alexandra Bracken|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1411581389p2/2973783.jpg] descriptions of the world in regards to things like the government, the camps, the various police groups and all the afflicted kids really drew me in and made me feel like the world was believable. There were a couple of plot twist like things that really didn't surprise me like how Clancy was an evil dude who was going to try to mind control Ruby or that they really should have read Jack's letter but there were other times where I didn't see it coming really at all, especially at the end of the book. The ending of the book made e excited to read the rest of the trilogy without feeling like the ending was rushed or that it was only trying to make people read the next book. I really couldn't relate to the main characters because of their crazy pasts and abilities. I did enjoy reading about them and I did genuinely like them but I would have liked them even better if I could relate to them a bit more. I do think that the world building was really good but there were a few times where something or a group of people would be referenced and I would want to know more. The color groups in this book also frustrated me just a bit. I knew that greens were smart and oranges could do mind control, but I never felt like I really knew what the blues, yellows, and reds could do beyond little hints, even though both Chubs and Liam were blues and Zu was a yellow. I'm sure some of this was intentional but I would have liked a little more information because it really only frustrated me instead of intriguing me. I am very excited to see what happens next and to see the world fleshed out a little more in the next two books. ( )

Interesting idea of the abilities of the characters but the writing in the first half was not as captivating as I have expected. After the midpoint, things got a LOT MORE interesting and it was a fun adventure.
4 stars but actually it's more of a 3.8? Excited to read the next installment but its not one of the "omg I need that next book now" series. :) ( )

I enjoyed this book and I really look forward to watching the movie this weekend. Ok, so in this story all children have suffered from some kind of illness that has killed most of them. The ones that survive end up with special abilities. The world doesn't really know what to do with them so they are sent to the "rehabilitation camps" which are pretty much prison camps where the children are tested on and treated terribly. After spending 6 years in one, Ruby finally manages to get out and joins a group of other kids that have also managed to escape their own camp. Everyone seems to have some kind of secret or agenda and knowing who can be trusted is tricky.

4 stars when I read it in 2018
5 stars when I read it in 2021.

"The darkest minds tend to hide behind the most unlikely faces."

So, finally walls have been built on the US borders against Canada and Mexico, but it's to keep the American people in. NOT to keep other countries out. Only kids between the ages of 8-14 have been susceptible to a plague. It's not about all of the kids dying though, it's about the survivors. They came out with special abilities ranked Green, Blue, Yellow, Orange, and Red (in that order). The kids have been rounded up by the government and were put into 'rehabilitation' camps so that the kids can 'one day be brought back to society' basically a bunch of BS told by the president. The kids are treated like slaves, aren't allowed to talk or use their abilities, and work at gun point. Our main character, Ruby, has done some pretty terrible stuff, and I love how everything is explained to the reader through events. The entire book was entertaining and didn't slow down. I loved every moment, from her escape to every other thing that I won't mention for sake of not spoiling haha.

I loved the characters so much I just wanted to be part of the book and have a group hug
Liam and Ruby's relationship was the best ( )

I read this book after seeing the movie (back in 2018) and honestly I loved the movie then and love this book now. I'm a sucker for YA dystopian, so this really checked all my boxes. ( )
