It started fine, with better characters and slightly less "Mary Suey" but as I got nearer the ending I started to realize that I wouldn't get many answers in this first installment. Lucky for me, the questions weren't that interesting to begin with, so I guess I'll pass on the other books. Celaena is wasting away in the slave mines when Chaol hauls her out and presents her to the Prince so they may make her an offer. Celeana is offered a chance at freedom IF she competes to become the King's Champion. She must best the other competitors and serve the King she despises for four years, but then she will have her freedom. Neither men trust the 'Queen of the Underground' but she ends up charming them as they get to know her during the months of training and the Trials to elminate the weeker candidates. You can see the bonds forming and begin to wonder which man will win her affections. Meanwhile, there's murders, magic and intrigue and visions to guide and warn Celaena that she must win to save the world from evil. I enjoy epic fantasies and it's a bonus that the protagonist is a powerful, young woman who managed to rise from loss to be a champion for good, even if she's an assassin. While there's some obvious storylines, it's done so well you don't care, you just want to enjoy the world. I'm definitely looking forward to reading book two, to see how the evil creepy castle reveals itself as well as where her friendships with the Princess Nehemia, Prince Dorian, Chaol and the poisoner Nox develop. More of my reviews can be found at https://wyldheartreads.wordpress.com/ The beginning of this book feels like many other Teen Novels, and it is replete with tropey writing. But the story picks up pace and becomes fairly interesting up to the denouement. The end is fairly rushed, and I did not at all buy into what we're supposed to see as a love triangle, but I was definitely entertained. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension

[Barnbokskatalogen] Inga biblioteksbeskrivningar kunde hittas. |

“No matter what happens," she said quietly, "I want to thank you."
Chaol tilted his head to the side. "For what?"
"Her eyes stung but she blamed it on the fierce wind and blinked away the dampness. "For making my freedom mean something.”
