The most famous of the stories, heavily rewriten by August Derleth include : The Survivor , Wentworth's day, The Peabody Heritage, The Gable Window, and The Shadow out of Space. For the fan of Derleth-Lovecraft colaborations. ( ) Most of y'all now realise that this book was written by August Derleth after the death of H. P. Lovecraft and that HPL had no hand in the writing of these stories. This collection is a work of pure pastiche, and it is meant to be so by its author. It is because, in part, these are meant to be tales told in the Lovecraft manner that Lovecraft's name was deceptively added to the byline. Derleth meant, with these voices, not only to echo Lovecraft's ideas, but to mimic Lovecraft's narrative voice as closely as possible. In this, the book is a complete failure. However, as a collection of stories "in the Lovecraft tradition," the book is rather good. I have been highly critical of these stories in the past; but a couple of years ago I decided to read my hardcover copy of the original Arkham House edition and comment on each story in a live YouTube video. In rereading the book, I came to see that the stories do not ripoff Lovecraft's ideas as blatantly as I had been led to believe by critics who hate Derleth, and I came away from my new reading of this book completely satisfied. I must add that very few other Lovecraftians agree with my assessment of the tales in this book, and so perhaps my fondness for these stories is but some queer peculiarity in my nature. Almost no one, for example, agrees with me that "The Survivor" is one of the finest Lovecraftian tales ever written, excellent in execution and very close to the story as Lovecraft himself may have written it. The writing of the story was based on rather detailed notes left by Lovecraft that formed a coherent outline, and Derleth followed that outline exactly, with but a few modifications inspired by his obsession with the captivating lore of Lovecraft's Mythos. For my own discussions concerning the stories, I refer you to my YouTube videos. I can, here, recommend the book to any who enjoy the pure Lovecraft tale. These stories are very well written (Derleth was a far better writer than people want to admit)and sincere as youthful homage to a beloved author and friend.
