I absolutely loved this book! Dare I say, it could possibly be the best book I will read this year? I laughed, I gasped, and I just about cried towards the end along with all the different characters.

Stockett does a wonderful creating dynamic characters that you feel like you can actually relate to, understand what they have gone through, and (some of them) like you can hate as much as characters in the book do.

Aibileen Clark is a black maid, in 1962 Jackson, Mississippi, raising her seventeenth white child. She's always taken orders quietly, but lately it leaves her with a bitterness she can no longer bite back. Her friend Minny Jackson has certainly never held her tongue, or held on to a job for very long, but now she's working for a newcomer with secrets that leave her speechless. And white socialite Skeeter Phelan has just returned from college with ambition and a degree but, to her mother's lament, no husband. Normally Skeeter would find solace in Constantine, the beloved maid who raised her, but Constantine has inexplicably disappeared.

Together, these seemingly different women join to work on a project that could forever alter their destinies and the life of a small town - to write, in secret, a tell-all book about what it's really like to work as a black maid in the while homes of the South. Despite the terrible risks they will have to take, and the sometimes humorous boundaries they will have the cross, these three women unite with one intention: hope for a better day. ( )

The Help by Kathryn Stockett What can anyone say that hasn't already been said about this book?

Who never cried and laughed and shared the multitude of emotion wrought by this story? It would take a truly dead person not to respond to this book on any level. It has seldom been that injustice can be seen so truly clear to anyone with a heart.I was born in 1950  and by the time I "woke up from childhood" all this was actually happening for real in the world where I lived. My impression of America before that came from movies and comics and TV. Part of that wakening was to realise that America was both the bright shiny place of the future AND the most barbaric, ignorant, hate-filled hole in the universe at the same time. How can anyone reconcile this apartheid racist view and the Summer of Love all coming from the one land. In truth America has never been one land, it has always been North and South, Black and White, West and East.It continues to enthral the rest of the world with its propaganda machine at full power (I used to think it was to fool the rest of the world but only later realised that it is mainly for the benefit of its own inhabitants). How can so much good and so much bad come from this one place? How can anyone not born there ever understand what it is like to be "American"?God Bless You America and just stay the fuck away from the rest of us.

Stuart: I've never met a woman that says exactly what she's thinking.
Skeeter: Well, I got plenty to say.
Minny: Eat my shit.
Hilly: What'd you say?
Minny: I said eat... my... shit.
Hilly: Have you lost your mind?
Minny: No, ma'am. But you is about to. 'Cause you just did.
Skeeter: I'm sorry, but were you dropped on your head as an infant, or were you just born stupid?
Aibleen: You is kind. You is smart. You is important.
