This story brings a lot of Chinese folklore, and many adventures with Rendi. Rendi finds himself having a vivid, and unstoppable imagination after meeting a woman who is known for her crazy storytelling. As he is working as a chore boy, he questions many things in life. The reader gets to go on a journey with Rendi, figuring out that he has the power to answer all of life's questions. This is a great read for a young explorer, who maybe could learn some things from Rendi. Overall, it would be a good story to keep students on their toes and interested. Another bonus of this book is it is multicultural, meaning many different students could find themselves in the story. ( ![]() Starry River of the Sky by Grace Lin is a companion novel to her award-winning story Where the Mountain Meets the Moon. Lin combines her love for Chinese folklore to bring a fantasy-filled adventure to life. Starry River of the Sky follows a young boy Rendi and his discovery that the moon is missing. While Rendi discovers that someone needs to bring back the moon, he begins to deal with past anger towards his own family realizing how much he misses them. This novel also uses colorful Asian styled illustrations to bring to life the stories that Rendi hears and tells throughout his adventure. This book is not quite as engaging as Where the Mountain Meets the Moon but still holds to a four-star out of five-star rating, due to its excellent imagery and story-telling qualities. A not so typical science fiction story can help expand readers’ interest in books. This book is a perfect addition to any library because of its fantasy and engaging plot as well as the spotlight it brings on Chinese culture. Both young readers and adult readers will finish reading Lin’s story wanting more adventures and more stories. I read and absolutely loved "Where the Mountain Meets the Moon" and was very excited to pick up another book by Lin. This book was very similar to “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon” theme wise. I didn't like this book quite as much as that book, but it was still very good. This book follows a young boy named Rendi who has run away from home and is working as a chore boy in a small village. A mysterious lady arrives and, through stories, helps both the village and Rendi find their way. There is excellent storytelling in here and interesting folklore. I continue to really enjoy the way the book is put together with beautiful illustrations and full color plates throughout. I didn’t think this story was as engaging and fluid as “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon”. This book does weave a lot of stories within stories but they weren’t as adventurous.. Overall I enjoyed this beautifully done Asian-themed folklore story. Although not as stunning as “Where the Mountain Meets the Moon” it still has a lot of the qualities that made me love that book. I recommend to those who enjoy folklore and fairy tales. This book is for grades 3-5. It is about a village that is missing the moon. Only a young boy Rendi notices, the moon missing. He works as a chore boy in the village inn and is curious about everything he notices. Then one day a mysterious lady comes into town. She tells stories that transforms everyone and allows Rendi to think about how his own life holds the answers to all his curiosities. This would be good when discussing multicultural folktales, and you could compare them. Oh, this was a charming book! It is a story about the power of story, about interpreting traditional Chinese myths, and the power of family and friends. Great way to start off my BookRiot 2016 and GoodReads challenges. inga recensioner | lägg till en recension
