Blog Review: https://trishadoeseverythingbutstudy2.wordpress.com/2021/01/01/my-november-in-bo...

I don't even know why I like like this one.....it had insta-love, it was a sequel to a book I didn't love, it had a not-that-good cover(honestly, I would have never picked this just from the covers), it was way too fast and at the same time really slow....but here I am, giving it 4 stars and ready to pick up hte next book in this series.

It probably stems from the fact that this book dealt with trauma a lot better, I think? And the revelations were actually pretty surprising!I got that she was more or less raped many times over, but that she was pregnant and actually gave birth was not something I had guessed. And I hated the way her family was treating her in this.

Also, Beast was really likable! Like my friend Brinley said, the fact that the love interest was portrayed as ugly, and then stayed ugly, was really good(Brain: That's the only synonym you could think of?)(Me: Shut Up) I mean, it didn't even turn to finding-beauty-in-the-ugliness or anything, she keeps thinking of him as ugly, and that change is jarring but refreshing!

I somehow loved this way more than the first one. Maybe because we were removed from a lot of the action, but not completely? This one was way more personal, and I think that was also a reason. The characterisation of Sybella did seem quite different from the first book, but I liked her better in this, so I'm just gonna ignore that.

I also liked that we got snippets of Ismae and Duval, because I did like them in the first one, and I was so happy we got the Duchess! Even though she was only there for a little while, I was just so happy! You will not believe the joy that descended on me when d'Albret died. I was so happy (Brain: That's the third time; what a vocabulary)(Me: *glares*) that the guy is dead, and I'm glad he's not even welcome in Hell, or Heaven, or whatever (the Afterlife?), because that was a good explanation for the lack of marque, and I was worried he might still stay alive because of it.

Julian is someone I had very mixed feelings about. On the one hand, he raped her and got her pregnant, and the child died, and he was still trying to have sex with her; and on the other, he came through in the end. I don't know, I find incest disturbing and disgusting, and it seemed like this was only happening because of lack of sex education, but can I forgive him for that? Is the father at fault here? Probably. But that shouldn't mean he can do what he wants? Maybe he mistook one type of love (sibling-ly) for another(lover-ly), but wasn't this kind of thing common knowledge? I still don't know, and probably never will, so Julian? You're half-forgiven until further notice.

Also, could someone please explain battle rage/lust/fever? It sounds from the descriptions like they're possessed or infected, but it's like a mood or something?

Well, I loved it, and I recommend it to anyone who read the first book and had mixed feelings about it. If you liked the first one, you are really likely to like this one. But if you didn't, give this a chance. Thank you Brinley for telling me the same :) ( )

This one was slow for the first 30% or so and then it took off. I didn't like it as much as I liked the first one but I will keep reading the series. ( )

Dark Triumph is the 2nd book in the His Fair Assassin series. This story was much darker than the story of Ismae related in book one, Grave Mercy. Sybella serves the God of Death, Mortain, as an assassin in 15th century France. The convent where she was trained has sent her on a mission back to her father's household. Her father is the evil and barbaric Count d'Albret. As she spies and murders those marked for death within her father's household, she discovers that a prisoner held in the dungeons is an ally who will help fight for the Dutchess Anne. Can she help the prisoner escape and fulfill her destiny?

The story of Sybella is much more personal and dark. She has grown up victimized by the violence of her father. She feels abandoned by her god, Mortain, and worries that she will be unable to unleash the revenge she craves against her father. There is a lot of violence and difficult subjects in this book....infanticide, incest, rape, the subjugation and murder of women. The story was fabulous, but delves into some pretty serious topics that might be a bit traumatic for younger readers. Even though it is classified as Young Adult literature, I think it would be best for readers who are at least 16.

I liked Sybella as a main character. She has been through so much in her life and came through it stronger and more determined. She is fierce! It's nice to see female characters who can hold their own in a fight, and who aren't just cowering and waiting to be saved by men. She fights alongside the men and is a formidable warrior in her own right.

I'm enjoying this series so far. So far there are 3 books, but Goodreads lists two more possible books without titles. I researched a bit to see if I could dig up any information about whether there will actually be more books in this series, but was unable to find any information. So, for now, I will be happy with reading the third book and calling the series a trilogy until I see a title and publication date for another book.

I definitely recommend this series for older teen readers who like fantasy and action. ( )

these books continue to be reasonably wretched but still, fast reads about ladies killing dudes is a thing I'm super into ( )
