I normally don't read chick-lit, but I the plot of this book sounded interesting and I really enjoyed it. It was just a fun read and easy to get through. ( ) I got annoyed with Amy multiple times while reading this. But then I also got annoyed with myself multiple times during college. Truth y'all: college girls can be annoying. I loved the story, despite its frustrating bits, because it felt so cathartic. There are some great discussions about sexism and social strictures that make the ending incredibly satisfying (if, perhaps, a touch idealistic). I definitely want to read the rest of the series now. As far as it's potential readabilty for YA, I think I'd recommend it for older teens. I don't know how interesting tweens or middle teens would find it, and while there's nothing overtly sexed up about it, there is frank discussion of sexuality and sexual choices. Also, swearing. Not that teens would be adversely affected by either, but whatever. Secret Society Girl takes us into the heart of the Ivy League’s ultra exclusive secret societies when a young woman is invited to join as one of their first female members. Elite Eli University junior Amy Haskel never expected to be tapped into Rose & Grave, the country’s most powerful—and notorious—secret society. She isn’t rich, politically connected, or…well, male. Eli University, of course, is really Yale, home to both major-party 2004 presidential candidates as well as their infamous secret society, Skull & Bones. With 12 residential colleges and only two colleges’ freshmen living outside “Old Campus,” even geographical cues from Eli trace the physical realities of Yale, right down to street names (fictional Rose & Grave and real-world Skull & Bones are both on High Street).
