Ruth Moore is back with another story of small-town life on the coast of Maine. This time her writing follows several members of the Ellises, the well-respected and independent family that originally settled in Candlemas Bay. Jen Ellis is forced to play hostess to summer borders in order to pay off her late husband's debts. Her son Jeb must choose between his schooling and his devotion to the family fishing trade. For Candace Ellis, Jen's sister-in-law, a house full of summer-people could not be worse. Could Candace's selfish act cause the family to fall apart, or will it ultimately bring happiness for the rest of the Ellises? Moore communicates a place and its people through just one family full of unique and strong-willed characters. As in her other novels, Ruth Moore uses detailed day-to-day lives to build characters of depth and tell a universal story of courage, heartbreak and love that, despite the hardships, is ultimately warm and moving.… (mer)

St. Barts 2019 #8 - Finally finished my last vacation book - started in the Caribbean, finished in the bitter cold of January in Maine! But it was about Maine, so it's all good. My obsession with the fishing life of coastal Maine islands and the fishing villages continues with the next book on my shelf by Ruth Moore. This was a bit sprawling, and not necessarily in a good way....thought it was going to be all about 16-year-old Jeb and his need to follow in family tradition and live off the sea.....but then it turned into a tale of loss and a struggling mother of 6 trying to hold it together.....no wait, it seems to be about a dysfunctional set of 3 sisters struggling in the family homestead....no....its about the quiet sister who is a talented artist, but has kept it a secret....oh.....no, i think it is about the 16-17 year-old's quest to go to sea.... I probably have made my point.....the setting i loved, the daily Maine coast life i loved, many of the characters i loved (or hated, by design)....but it was a bit too random....I will continue with Moore and read the rest of her work, and of course my Elisabeth Ogilvie, who does it like no one else....but I wished for more than i got here.....still no regrets.
