In which I continue to fail at literary fiction. (Also at reading novels about post-Shoah Jews.)

It's just so bewildering, to read something and to not enjoy it. Not get pleasure from it. The prose here is workmanlike at best, overly demonstrative of its own cleverness at worst (Holly Anhalt's sections are like eavesdropping on a particularly precocious comp lit class), the characters aren't people I would willingly spend time with, the plot is slow-moving and never feels emotionally urgent — I keep coming away from books like this and wondering why the author wrote them. If they were to post in [a:John Scalzi|4763|John Scalzi|http://photo.goodreads.com/authors/1236228326p2/4763.jpg]'s "Big Idea" series, what would they say? What is the point? What drove them to spend time and effort writing and revising and editing and everything that goes along with publishing a literary novel in today's market? Why should I care?

I guess it's that line from [b:The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie|517188|The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie |Muriel Spark|http://photo.goodreads.com/books/1307465236s/517188.jpg|6132856]: For people who like that sort of thing, that is the sort of thing they like. ( )

This is the story of an american woman who goes to Berlin to reclaim her heritage. I have to admit to getting lost at times. Sometimes too many other things going on. I won this from Librarything. ( )

I won this book from a LT member giveaway.

I enjoyed this book, even though it was quite different from what I normally read. The story weaves together 13 voices in post-Nazi/post-Communist Germany. The main character is Holly, an American Jew whose parents lived through the Holocaust. Holly goes to Germany to investigate a land claim from her parents former country house. Along her journey she interacts with a dozen other characters who each have their parts to contribute to the story. Pain, loss, joy, betrayal, and love are the emotions expressed by the characters. Eventually, through learning about those around her Holly finds closure with her family's history. ( )

This book took me down a path rooted in, what the new generation probably thinks, ancient history. The story of the Holocaust and its survivors struck home with me, as several of my ancestors also escaped. The main character, Holly, struggles with her real emotions and the emotions that she believes she should feel. I liked how the author employed the use of different characters throughout the story. Some of the various characters were a bit confusing at times, but that made the story all the more interesting. ( )
