Ett virus som slår mot alla typer av gräs (och därmed all säd) har i ett slag gjort att bara en bråkdel av befolkningen kan försörjas med mat och i försöken att välja ut vilka som skall få överleva bryter det brittiska samhället samman totalt. Christopher skildrar oerhört levande och kusligt hur såväl en civilisation som människorna själva på bara några dagar förfaller i barbari där allt handlar om överlevnad för sig själv och sina närmaste. Under resan mot Cumbria och säkerheten i en lättförsvarad dalgång där huvudpersonens bror är potatisodlare förvandlas de resande allt mer. De handlingar de utför för att säkra sin egen överlevnad får dem att tvivla på om överlevnaden ens är värd priset. "Death of Grass" är en skicklig framställning av hur skör vår civilisation är och av vad som händer med människor när den snabbt rycks undan. ( )
