I liked the first in the series, but in this sequel it bothered me that Gidwitz was changing Hans Christian Andersen's stories to make them darker. I couldn't understand the point. Rather than just rewriting or updating the classic fairy tales, he massages a selection of themes and tales from different authors as "chapters" in a coherent narrative, along with some original material.
