A classic Dr. Suess story about individuality and being comfortable with who you are. Star bellied sneetches think they're better than the ones without stars and they become jealous. A salesman sells them a way to solve their problem but in the end he takes all their money and they're left all looking the same. They realize that the star meant nothing and they really are all just sneetches. Good lesson for someone who is insecure and wants to be or look like someone else. What is important is what's on the inside, not the outside. Don't let manipulative people take advantage of you like the salesman does to the sneetches. ( )

This classic book is a story about the Plain-Belly Sneetches and the Star-Belly Sneetches, who were no different from each other besides the star on some of their bellies. The ones with stars on their bellies treated the plain-belly sneetches like they are better than them. Once a man and his machine come into to town, the sneetches have a constant battle between who is better than the other, only to find out that they are all the same. This is a great book that teaches children about discrimination, and the effects of treating others unfairly. [return][return]Dr. Seuss, a very well known author in children’s literature, is the master of addressing serious issues through a children book. This would be a good introduction to bullying, because it could open students' eyes to what bullying is, and provide the opportunity to have discussions about the topic. This would also be a good introduction to the books about the Holocaust.
